Given the recent history of meddling in Brazilian affairs by Musk and Twitter/X, this feels ominous:

Doug Ford responds to Trump's threat of tarrifs by complaining that "we're not like Mexicans" and finds the comparison to be "the most insulting thing I've ever heard"

Even for Ford this is wild levels of bigotry

Installed Matrix on the server last night. Process was a little bit fiddly but everything seems to be running smoothly now!

Not that I have any pressing need to run it myself, mind you. Really just enjoy doing this stuff as a hobby. Depraved, I know

Just saw a post saying that Blockchain Capital, the crypto firm that led Bluesky's most recent funding round, is Brock Pierce's company. Whaat? Yikes! News to me!

But weirdly his name isn't on the company's website or its wikipedia page. Huh?

Well, seems someone scrubbed Pierce's name from the list of founders in Blockchain Capital's Wikipedia entry in March 2023:

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Blockchain_Capital&diff=1256254680&oldid=1143075964

and according to web.archive.org snapshots of the company website, he looks to have left sometime around mid-2017 - or at least that's when he disappears from the site.

May 26, 2017:

https://web.archive.org/web/20170526190939/http://blockchain.capital:80/team/

June 22, 2017:

https://web.archive.org/web/20170622230226/http://blockchain.capital/team

I mean, it's still a Crypto VC firm, but I don't know if I'd call it 'Brock Pierce's company' at this point. Just sayin'

I dunno, I think it's fine and good if people have accounts in more than one online social space actually - and while I maintain a healthy skepticism around what the future holds for bluesky, I'm no longer actively hostile toward it.

Time will tell, of course. But with Meta pretty obviously looking to shape the future of the AP protocol, and being warmly welcomed by a good number of the fedi's self-appointed leaders, the future of this space is also anything but assured - at least in its current, relatively cohesive form.

(I really shouldn't link blog posts at 2 am local; here it is again)

A couple months ago, Cory Doctorow and Paris Marx had a minor-ish disagreement on here that probably few people saw.

Then about a week ago, Doctorow published a blog post that doesn't name names, but references the exchange. And look, I like Cory, truly! He's done a lot of great work! But I think he's way off base here.

So, since I enjoy the focus and energy I get when fueled by annoyance and indignation, I wrote a thing about it :)

Is it the healthiest thing, to blog about stuff that makes me mad? Probably not, but it sure keeps me on task! 😇

(I got annoyed by a recent piece from Cory Doctorow - someone who I generally like and admire - and wrote about it: https://thedabbler.patatas.ca/pages/no-cory-its-about-sovereignty.html )

I've really been souring on Doctorow recently, and this recent blog post by him is one reason why. It's just one unfounded claim after another about the two cases, no sources or links, just alarmism around state overreach in two specific cases, for which he provides no evidence, only conjecture, and repeatedly blurs the line between what's known, and what's just his own wild speculation.

(The "precipitating incident" he refers to, by the way, was a recent exchange with Paris Marx on here. I thought Paris was correct then, and I haven't heard a good reason to change my mind!)
