A Platanna aka African Clawed Frog aka Xenopus lies in wait for prey.

Indigenous to Southern Africa they are apex predators in their environment

They were introduced into USA and Europe for pregnancy tests before more sophisticated tests were developed.

They are now considered a pest outside of Southern Africa

Swimming in the leiwater dam.

Lei means lead in Afrikaans

Leiwater is water that is collected in a dam and then released via channels into the small Karoo town below where it is used to water gardens.

I am wearing a hat because even at 8 AM the temperature is well on its way to 37°C (100 something in °F) and the sun burns hard

Water is precious in this hard land because the annual rainfall is usually around 30 CMs (12 inches)

Survival in a barren land

The straight lines of vegetation are caused by cracks in the underlying rock which is usually about 5cm below the soil surface.

The plants grow above the cracks because there is more soil and more water in the cracks.
