Unexpectedly warm January puzzles climate scientists
Last month was the world's warmest January on record and raised further questions about the pace of climate change, scientists say.
January 2025 had been expected to be slightly cooler than January 2024 because of a shift away from a natural weather pattern in the Pacific known as El Niño.
But instead, last month broke the January 2024 record by nearly 0.1C, according to the European Copernicus climate service.

Petition: End the use of cages and crates for all farmed animals
We think the UK Government must ban all cages for laying hens as soon as possible.
We think it should also ban the use of all cage and crates for all farmed animals including:
• farrowing crates for sows
• individual calf pens
• cages for other birds, including partridges, pheasants and quail

Could the UK actually get colder with global warming?
Of all the possible climate futures, there's a scenario where the United Kingdom and north-west Europe buck the trend of global warming and instead face plunging temperatures and freezing winters.
It's not the most likely outcome, but a number of scientists fear that the chance of it happening is growing, and that the consequences would be so great that it deserves proper consideration.
They are concerned that the ocean currents that bring warm water from the tropics to the North Atlantic could weaken - or even collapse - in response to climate change.

No targets for aviation or farming in UK climate plan
The UK has restated ambitious plans to reduce its emissions of planet-warming greenhouse gases by 81% by 2035, but has not explained how it will achieve the goal.
In a new action plan submitted to the United Nations, the government also signed up to global goals to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030.
However, it has not set targets for sectors like farming, aviation, or energy to address those sectors' contributions to climate change.

Will electric planes and sustainable fuel make Heathrow's third runway green?
The expansion of Heathrow has long been opposed by green groups and Rachel Reeves' announcement will be extremely controversial, not least because of its environmental impact.

How would #ProportionalRepresentation work in the UK?
"Under #PR, when you do end up with a single-party majority, it’s because a majority of people, or close to a majority, voted for that party, rather than the FPTP system unfairly delivering a majority without the numbers to back it up."

Planet-warming gas levels rose more than ever in 2024
Levels of the most significant planet-warming gas in our atmosphere rose more quickly than ever previously recorded last year, scientists say, leaving a key global climate target hanging by a thread.
Concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2) are now more than 50% higher than before humans started burning large amounts of fossil fuels.
Last year, fossil fuel emissions were at record highs, while the natural world struggled to absorb as much CO2 due to factors including wildfires and drought, so more accumulated in the atmosphere.

What The Label DOESN'T Tell You About YOUR FOOD
Shockingly, there is no legal requirement to show how animals were raised. Almost all meat bought in supermarkets in the UK is factory farmed with the animals kept in appalling conditions.
Without compulsory method of production labelling, the packaging of factory farmed meat and dairy products will continue to mislead shoppers, undermining consumer choice and preventing higher-welfare farmers from differentiating their products.
Act now for honest labelling: https://www.ciwf.org.uk/honest-labelling

Walleys Quarry stench prompts more than 700 complaints in a day
The regulator of a landfill site where noxious gases give off a foul stench has said it has received more than 760 complaints in one day.
Walleys Quarry in Silverdale, Staffordshire, was served a closure notice in November after the Environment Agency (EA) said there was a risk of "significant long-term pollution".
Some residents have linked pollution there to instances of ill health in the area, leading to years of protests, legal rows and EA scrutiny.

2024 first year to pass 1.5C global warming limit
The planet has moved a major step closer to warming more than 1.5C, new data shows, despite world leaders vowing a decade ago they would try to avoid this.
The European Copernicus climate service, one of the main global data providers, said on Friday that 2024 was the first calendar year to pass the symbolic threshold, as well as the world's hottest on record.
