Being ill@home means I have upgraded two servers, removed a lot of test & try stuff, and moved all remaining services to proper systemd podman quadlets. Feeling good.

Confession: I hate Debian. Packages in stable so old they still have little annoying bugs which are fixed everywhere else and no easy way to upgrade without compiling or finding someone's personal repository which may or may not be dead in a month.

The only distro worse than Debian is Slackware, the grand-grand-grand-grandmother of all distros.

Thank you for coming to my vent talk.

Sometimes I wonder in which categories are the advertisement algorithms putting me, because I guess people usually don't get a mixture of gym equipment and stuff like PCI-E time synchronization card with GPS sync or server mainboards with 6+ full PCI-E x16 slots ...

So, no #fosdem for me and @shine this year, we are slightly ill and decided responsibly to not potentially endanger other people. At least I have more plans for our next visit to Brussels, there is a train museum and tram museum!

I gave up and after morning episode of Slayers I started japanese on Duolingo. Let's see in a year if I can at least understand a few phrases ... @shine , why are you feeding so much anime into me? I used to be pure and innocent!

I feel like I should describe my main expertise not as "cybersecurity specialist", but as "legacy improv queen", because most of my work contains non-trivial time spent upgrading, containerising, hardening, investigating or decommissioning of legacy infrastructure.

Hate to say it, but I'm using "AI" chatbots (mostly copilot) more and more. Not to do work for me and I'm not uploading stuff to it - I use it just to help me remember stuff I didn't do for a long time.

Like specific configs, commandline one-liners, jumpstarts for scripts etc.

And it makes me wonder: because of my experience, I see a lot of mistakes, insecure recommendations, weird shortcuts it does and can correct them on the fly, but what about people who do not have this experience to compare with at all? For example, when using some nichΓ© tech, questions to the chatbot will deem much worse results because it was not learnt on it - but I can very easily overcome it by asking questions about similar, more widely adopted, tech - and improvise from received answers. Would a junior person with no experience do it? And even worse, I'm afraid of the day when I start finding more and more software run and developed by inexperienced juniors whose only learning path would be based on conversations with chatbots πŸ™

Because no matter how good would be the training set for any model, these chatbots are not sentient, they don't understand - they're just remixing stuff and returning most probable word after word after word. I'm also afraid that after some time, it will introduce a large "stagnation" by not recommending stuff developed recently, because it has not yet any information about it, which will further amplify said stagnation.

Any ideas how to put Signal username into a vcf card format? I want to provide my contact via NFC with Flipper Zero, but there's no field for that and I'm not sure what to use instead, so it would be reasonably displayed on an Android phone πŸ˜ƒ Custom field is not an option, phone doesn't display it. Maybe put there an image with Signal QR code/username? 😺

Okay, watched the whole season two and I now have mixed up feelings - it was really good, until the 15th episode. Then it went somehow... sideways? Like, the writing was suddenly terrible, it even looked like some of the animations got worse and sluggish. It seems like they had to haste the production or something. So... still worth watching, but the last six episodes should have been condensed into one or written entirely differently.

And, I love the ships. Need to get new Voyager and Protostar in Star Trek Online 😊

I love podman. Simple, easy, elegant and secure way to run various services for my personal purposes - homelab, social networks, websites, you name it.

What I don't love is to make the services run properly for the first time. Last time, I spent a few hours creating proper quadlet and digging into official container itself to make it run rootless and with proper permissions of the underlying user, so I could actually work with the data as the user who runs the podman...

... but after that, it's all sun and joy. I even started to put autoupdate to non-critical quadlets and so far, it works like a charm. Always the latest version of the service.

Compared to what I used to do when I was administering Windows machines or even linux ones years ago, this is a breeze.

Sorry for long podman appreciation post, it may happen again with some other tech in the future.

Nightmares are getting really specific lately. In today's dream, I received an old DeLorean as a gift, somebody crashed into it the same day in a parking lot and I've spent the rest of the dream looking for a veteran car repair service...

So, apparently I'm becoming a sort of otaku twenty years later than I should have, any tips on how to battle the urge to learn Japanese and how not to randomly spit out phrases from any anime I've seen during the last six months?

Finally watching the second season of Star Trek: Prodigy and what a delight it is! It's still a kid's show, but somehow they managed to put in more content for adult Trekkies also. And it's a continuing fan service so far - hearing Robert Picardo, Kate Mulgrew and others again - music for my ears. And there are so many cute little nods to other Star Trek shows - I especially liked the mention of Cerritos 😍 Yep, some of the stories are really "dumb" (again, it's a kid's show), but the overall tone is something I like more than what season 1 was.

We've seen the newest episode of Severance and oh my god, how I missed it. I'd watch the show even if it would be only a slideshow of photos of the corridors and computers and basically every item they've created for the show. It's mesmerizing.

Yeah, and the story is good too.

Tracking info for my little transparent dolphin finally updated and it's on their way home!

Looking forward to playing with it, I always wanted a sonic screwdriver type of device.
