To be a kid in school today is to be told you need to think critically about technology and media when the adults that impose it upon you have utterly failed to do so.

Sure, part of growing up is learning to co-exist with hypocrisy. But this captive hypocrisy is a whole new extreme.

What's the common thread? Outsourcing to third party vendors.

This is all free labor on my part to keep track of things, avoid paying more than I should when another bill shows up, or to keep my record clean.

And then there's the "student information system" the school uses getting hacked and exposing the kids' data...

Started the week forwarding a receipt to the eye doctor to prove I paid my bill. Why didn't they have the payment? "Sometimes things fall through the cracks."

Then it was the bank tracking down that using their vendor's UI to change a recurring transfer from principal payment to standard payment doesn't actually do that, which meant my payments didn't count. OK.

Now it's a bill from the city saying I didn't pay my water & sewer bill. No? Here's the receipt.

“The Vermont Legislature overwhelmingly passed a privacy bill with meaningful data minimization requirements, strong civil rights protections, and a private right of action before Governor Phil Scott vetoed the bill.”

This model policy for US states is nice to see, though.

"I need you to stop trying to explain away how fucking offensive using the internet and technology has become."

"Yet it’s not just the algorithms — It’s the entirety of the digital ecosystem, from websites to apps to the devices we use every day."

Sooo many good quotes in this one.

I have a theory that all of this is a reason people are sour on the economy. The economy never lets up or leaves you alone.

The eye doctor includes a slip of paper with their mailed invoice, a third-party payment URL on it. I use that to pay the copay balance with my credit card in November. There’s a receipt in my inbox. In January I get an invoice with a 30-day past due amount. I have to listen through two loops of holiday closures (Christmas and New Year’s) when I call, after the holidays have passed, and then ring through to a voicemail inbox where I first have to listen through old Labor Day closures.

Our long-time dentist retired, sold the practice. New dentist drops my email address into some bullshit AI-powered CSAT feedback platform that tells him he can boost his local ratings. This is a town of 8,000 people in rural Vermont and their calendar is fully booked six months out. What’s the goal here?

And then the billing issues.
