This week's donation went to the MX Linux project. It's a Linux distro based off Debian which gives the user a choice in init system between Sysvinit and SystemD as both are installed. You can download your choice of editions which use XFCE, KDE or Fluxbox as well as install other desktop environments after install. It can also easily be used with the libre kernel if one wanted to if you follow the instructions at FSFLA and uses the liquorix kernel by default. It uses the Ext file system by default. The latest release is called Libretto which is based off Debian 12 but has several enhancements and newer versions of certain packages if you use the "ahs" version. Overall it is a great option if one wants a distro giving them more freedom of choice.

The project's main website is here:

https://mxlinux.org/

The project has a forum and a presence on the fediverse:

The project accepts donations through Paypal, Stripe and through Github Sponsors if you wish to help financially:

I went over how easy it was to enable Full disk encryption on the FLX1 recently, so today I'm going to go over how to change the FDE password on a Librem 5 which uses PureOS. The Librem 5 comes preinstalled with FDE, at least mine did. The default password is on the bottom right square of the quick start guide, mine was "123456". To change this you just open the Gnome Disk Utility (also known as "Disks"), Tap the 31GB Disk, tap Partition 2, tap the gear in the bottom left, tap change passphrase, enter current password, enter new password, confirm new password, tap change password, then reboot the phone. Many mobile Linux options lack FDE outright and those that have it can make it difficult to setup. PureOS on my Librem 5 not only has it but it is very easy to change which is good because keeping a known default password is a terrible idea. Why other mobile Linux distros can't implement it like this or similar I do not know.

So a easy quick breakdown of the steps above is:

disks>disk >partition 2>gear>change passphrase>enter current>enter new>confirm>change>reboot

Full disk encryption is an important feature for me. Many mobile Linux options lack it outright and those that have it can make it difficult to setup. FuriOS on my FLX1 not only has it but it is very easy to setup. You literally only have to go into Settings>Encryption, toggle Encryption on, choose your FDE password and the reboot. After that eevry time you boot the phone you will have to put that password in. Why every mobile Linux distro can't implement it like this I do not know.

This week's donation went to the Mellium Co-op. It's a collection of Go libraries, tools, and modules related to XMPP. For those who don't know XMPP is a messaging protocol that is decentralized and offer better privacy and security than something like SMS.

The project's website is here:

https://mellium.im/

The source code is hosted on Codeberg:

The project has a presence on Mastodon and XMPP:
