Spent today discussing the status quo, challenges and perspectives for #ResearchSoftware in Germany, in a workshop at @bmbf_bund.

Happy that the ministry, esp. in its role as a research funder, put this on the agenda.

One topic that was brought to the table, e.g., by @pampel, M. Katerbow from @dfg_public and others: higher level efforts - e.g. around policies - should be well-coordinated with all actors to avoid disincentivization through uncertainty.

Do you publish your #ResearchSoftware to support #Reproducibility and enable #SoftwareCitation?

If you don't yet, or want to automate the process, join me at @helmholtz_hmc #hmc_fairfriday this Friday, where I'll talk about these things and #HERMES, a workflow we develop in @helmholtz to automate software publication with rich metadata.

New preprint: "Extending and Applying Automated HERMES #SoftwarePublication Workflows" by Sophie Kernchen, @led02, me, Michael Fritzsche and colleagues.

https://arxiv.org/abs/2410.17614

Came out of a #deRSE24 workshop and was really fun, especially as one of the co-authors is an intern from a local high school 🏫 who extended the 'hermes' Python package with a plugin to harvest metadata from Python manifests.

It took him ≪ fortnight. 🤯

I wish I was this talented. 🙌

New handout by @dfg_public: "Handling of #ResearchSoftware in the DFG’s Funding Activities" 📄!

Guiding principles include development and standards, software quality, accessibility & docs, citability & reusability 😍, software sustainability.

Recommendations for proposals include arguing why existing software cannot be reused in the case of planned new development, and making explicit that the project needs #RSE w/ specific skills for specific tasks!

Lovely start to #rsecon24 yesterday, meeting many familiar and some new RSE friends at the social event.

Looking forward to the conference proper and the many conversations surely to be had.
