Noticed recently that my site is getting a bit sluggish - and with message expiration taking place, that really shouldn't be happening.

Investigation showed that message expiration has been quietly failing for a while now.

Fixing it isn't the issue. The issue is helping people get their site databases trimmed down again. Removing tens or hundreds of thousands of activities is going to generate quite a system load. And folks on providers with SQL writes/hr counters could run into serious issues.

So the job has been broken into smaller chunks and is being run more frequently until it catches up with the backlog. I don't think this will cause anybody grief, but this is what's happening if you see any weirdness.

Hopefully the only thing you'll notice is that every day things are going to get a bit faster again.

A "permissions role" isn't really about your connections and what they can or cannot do.

It's mostly about you and what kind of a channel you want to have. One that any human on earth can spy on and hoover everything you've ever published into their AI creations, or one they cannot.

It's actually more about the people that aren't your connections.

I've tried to figure out the difference between the channel types "Social - Normal" and "Social - Restricted". So I switched between them and then checked the permission roles for permissions inherited from the channel type.

Curiously, judging by which permissions permission roles inherit from the channel type, both channel types are identical. All the following permissions which do not have individual channel-wide settings were inherited from the channel type in both cases, so these permissions are granted by both channel types:

Also, all the following permissions which do not have individual channel-wide settings were not inherited from the channel type in both cases, so these permissions are denied by both channel types:

The other permissions in the permission role editor are inherited from individual settings under Security and Privacy.

Happy December 25th to folks on the far side of the international date line.

A new setting is available on your Display Settings page.  What this optional setting does is remove all comments from your channel home page, so that your channel appears to be "just a single-user blog" to outsiders. What it doesn't look like is a "social network" which might be subject to new overly-restrictive UK laws.

Insiders will note that it is still a fully functional consent-based fediverse node with nomadic identity, permissions, and fine-grained conversation restrictions (media access, post audience, and replies).

The streams repository does not encourage breaking laws. It does provide a number of online safety tools so that you have a wide range of options; should you find some day that you require them.

Christopher wrote the following post Fri, 30 Aug 2024 07:07:23 -0700 Success!  🎉🎉🎉 All of my services, including this instance, have successfully migrated to my new (new to me) server. I use @YunoHost. It's a great way to run server apps without being a complete expert, but allows (sometimes requires) the use of the command line. A great way to learn.

You don't even need fancy equipment. All of this can be run on an old desktop or laptop. Most of this can even run on a Raspberry Pi.

So, what am I running on my server?

I'd be glad to help anyone wanting to learn how to get started. If you're looking to own your own data, this is the path to digital personal sovereignty. You do not own your posts or photos in Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, TikTok, or Twitter. You don't own your files or photos in iCloud, Google, Onedrive, or Dropbox. All these companies have to do is close your account for any reason (or no reason) and you've lost it all. Can you imagine losing all of your photos stored on Facebook or Google? 😱

Self hosting is KING!

Jupiter Rowland's (streams) outlet wrote the following post Wed, 07 Aug 2024 03:25:59 -0700 Problems connecting (streams) channels with nomadic ActivityPub to Mastodon accounts

As it looks like to me, connecting a (streams) channel with nomadic ActivityPub, i.e. one created on an account registered on (streams) 24.07.20 or later, to a Mastodon account does not work properly.

If the (streams) channel tries to follow the Mastodon account, the Mastodon account lists the (streams) channel as following if followers don't have to be confirmed manually. But the Mastodon user is apparently not notified about the new connection or connection request.

If the Mastodon account tries to follow the (streams) channel, the (streams) channel does not issue a notification about a connection request, and the Mastodon account does not appear on the connection list at all.

I'm not sure whether this issue is limited to the instance I'm on or a general one that appeared with the switch to nomadic identity via ActivityPub.
