Deconstruction of American academic and research greatness currently being pursued by this administration. Toward what end? For what purpose?

"Apparently all the PhD researchers holding prestigious NSF-funded research fellowships are having their salaries withheld until some unspecified time when the leadership figures out how to eliminate any grant funding that doesn’t align with the president’s political ideology."

"Guinea has hit a major milestone: sleeping sickness rates have dropped so low that the disease is no longer considered a health threat (there is now less than one case per 10,000 people).

Seven other countries – including Togo... and Chad... – have... hit the milestone

Kinda maybe parents rights / parents choice folks should spend more time at school board meetings asking how their children's math and literacy scores can be improved rather than screaming to ban masks and install the Ten Commandments. Oh, and while they're at it, maybe push for gun reform to make schools safer, rather than fortify schools and put guns in classrooms.

Couldn't hurt to try.

Europe will always lead in cellular innovation (over the US) because of the regulatory structure, how payments work there, etc. I suspect that China also has the capacity to lead (but fears like restricted Huawei may hold it back).

Despite security concerns, China is going to make lots of "friends" around the world with its ability to manufacture and install wind and solar. Meanwhile the US will backslide — to fulfill MAGA wishes, to procure grift for the Orange Menace and out of spite (it's all connected) — and so-called strongmen will brag, "Drill baby, drill."

Crazy story — What happens when vital infrastructure is not maintained. If the ability to travel between major (and minor) cities was still regarded as a public service (if it ever was) this would not be allowed to happen: "Woman completes a domestic trip to Manchester (UK) via Spain to save cash"

BTW, privatizing rail (or other) service does not lower the price. It has already been tried.

More speculative, but also helped identify & quantify impact of cancer around the world, esp. in developing countries; as a result, the WHO — that one — shifted some attention to & began raising more funds for chronic disease management over NCDs.]

Grim: "A Long Way Down," by Paul Musgrave (U Mass, Amherst) — the undoing of and damage to western liberal progress in the United States under this administration is not opposition politics as usual, as much of the press continues to cover it. The setback will take decades to fully recover from.
