Oh nan ! Encore un autre nuisible qui s'apprête à détruire entièrement un étang ! Par contre je ne comprends pas, à chaque fois qu'on me parle de ragondins, on m'explique qu'ils détruisent tous les bords de rivières et menacent même la biodiversité et pourtant... Je vois ces gros rongeurs un peu partout et les milieux ne semblent pas particulièrement détruits (à part les destructions dues aux activités humaines)

I don't understand, everytime time people talk about coypus, they describe them as a dangerous specie that destroys river shores and threatens biodiversity ! But I see those rodents everywhere and... everything seems ok (except for the destruction related to human activity). What if ?

This photograph is ugly [elitism, snobbery and hierarchisation of living things]
I took this photo from an ornithological observatory overlooking a pond full of life. There were waders, cormorants, swans, lots of ducks and small passerines. I logged a lot of observations while enjoying the atmosphere and this special moment when the animals weren't afraid of me.
At one point, a guy came into the observatory with a gigantic lens. As I had a good look at the pond and was in a good mood, I pointed out a group of shoveler ducks in full light. The guy replied that no thanks, "they're just ducks, aren't they? It blew me away.
Apparently the 'fairly common' species weren't good enough for this guy, who only came for the prestigious stuff.
Oh my, I can't have those snobs and elitists at the observatories.
However, this photographer's ridiculous remark also shows something more worrying (but very common) in my opinion: the hierarchisation of species. Many people consider certain species to be more interesting than others (for all sorts of reasons), which implies that others deserve no consideration, or even contempt. In this case, the shoveler ducks were not worth a look for Mister Photo. Will he care about animals that are endangered but ugly? Not nice?
This system is at the root of speciesist ideologies and forms the basis for justifying animal exploitation.
Yes, I don't like snobby assholes, I much prefer ducks and swans.

Cette photographie est moche [élitisme, snobisme et hiérarchisation du vivant]
J'ai pris cette photo depuis un observatoire ornithologique qui donnait sur un étang rempli de vie. Il y avait des échassiers, des cormorans, des cygnes, des tas de canards, des limicoles, des petits passereaux. J'ai fait un beau relevé d'espèces tout en profitant de l'ambiance et de ce moment privilégié pendant lequel les animaux ne me craignaient pas.
À un moment, un type est venu dans l'observatoire avec un objectif gigantesque. Comme j'avais un bien vu qui se trouvait où sur l'étang et que j'étais de bonne humeur, je lui indique un groupe de canards souchets en pleine lumière. Le gars me répond que non merci "ça reste des canards hein". Ça m'a soufflé.
Apparemment les espèces "assez communes" n'étaient pas assez bien pour môssieur qui ne venait que pour du prestigieux.
Les snobs et élitistes dans les observatoires ne m'avaient pas du tout manqués.
Toutefois la remarque ridicule de ce photographe montre aussi quelque chose de plus inquiétant (mais très commun) à mon avis : la hiérarchisation des espèces. Beaucoup de gens considèrent que certains espèces sont plus intéressantes que d'autres (pour toutes sortes de raisons) ce qui implique que d'autres ne méritent pas de considération, voire méritent du mépris. En l'occurrence les canards souchets ou chipeaux ne valaient pas le coup d'œil pour môssieur. Est-ce qu'il se souciera des animaux en danger mais moches ? Pas gentils ? Pas intéressants ? (ou je ne sais quelle autres excuse naze)
Ce système est à la base des idéologies spécistes et forme le socle justificatif de l'exploitation animale.
Oui j'aime pas les connards de snobs, je préfère largement les canards.
