I have written up my #EmergingVoices plenary talk from @ResearchSoftEng #RSECon24 as a blog post for those who want to review my ideas around #Research in #RSE, the importance of communities, and my thoughts around #publication with software that I hope to explore with my 2025 @SoftwareSaved fellowship. Also includes a short section on my "backstory".

Tonight I'm headlining an evening of "Open Source Tools for Science" at St. John's College, University of Cambridge.

Preaching to the niche, but I just made some (very minor) contributions to Fortitude, an #OpenSource #Fortran #linting tool. Early days, but this is already a great project and has taught me some new things whilst using it - did you know that you need implicit none
inside interface functions?
Adopting it in my projects and you should definitely check it out! https://github.com/PlasmaFAIR/fortitude

Pleased to hear that our bid for funding to develop our #FTorch software was successful! £12.8k from C2D3/Accelerate and one of 13 successful projects from 93 applications!
We are looking to implement automatic differentiation to facilitate online training in #Fortran codes with collaborations across 3 #climate models!

Also touching on aspects of funding and corporations.
"The original creators never made a cent from the game", yet are incredibly humble, and focussed on their software being used for the benefit of educating people.

You have died of dysentery.
Fantastic YouTube documentary on the story of the Oregon Train. Covering aspects of #OpenSource, computer history, user testing, project evolution, and the role of computing in education.
Also giving recognition to the original creators.

Cleaning my desk and rediscovered an old postit stuck to my monitor stand. It used to be a daily reminder in previous research positions. Perhaps joining the #rse community was inevitable. #Research #SoftwareEngineering

My view of research software engineering - connecting people and expertise, breaking down silos, bridging research and software - sounds awfully like a "glue person". Looks around nervously ~ 🙃
