[#]Pachli 2.9.2 is now available. This release includes an overhaul of the Tamil translation thanks to a new contributor, and small improvements and fixes while I work on some larger changes that are stabilising in Pachli Current. More details at https://pachli.app/pachli/2025/01/30/2.9.2-release.html.

Thanks to தமிழ்நேரம், @kallekn, Aindriú Mac Giolla Eoin, Sunniva Løvstad, Juan M Sevilla, jens person, and @vform for their contributions to this release, and apologies to anyone I've missed.

Any attachments or polls on the post you're replying to are not shown either; again, for reasons of space, and because they wouldn't be interactive.

This is what it looks like if the post you're replying to doesn't fit on the screen.

As much of the post is shown as possible, and at least three lines at the bottom are reserved for your reply.

If you type more than three lines the space automatically expands.

How do we all feel about this work-in-progress #Pachli UI when replying?

Instead of low-accessible small text and a tiny triangle to tap, the post you're replying to is always shown.

The text in the post is selectable, for easy copy and paste.

Links/hashtags/mentions in the post are not clickable, so you don't inadvertently click them and go elsewhere.

And the display scrolls, so as you type more the reply moves up.

The version of #Pachli Current available in the Play Store now (2.9.1+11480d80) should fix (a) the crash on startup that some people observed, and (b) home and notification timelines resetting to random locations when returning to them.

Thanks again to everyone that reported issues with troubleshooting information, that was very helpful.

If you don't use #Pachli Current you can stop reading now.

If you do, then, as ever, thank you for doing so, and taking the time to report bugs and provide feedback.

The most recent release has a bug that can wildly miscalculate your reading position when restoring state. I'm testing a fix now, but it's unlikely to be widely released until Friday.

If #Pachli Current is your primary Mastodon client I'd advise switching back to #Pachli for the next 48 hours.

[#]Pachli 2.9.1 is now available; you can view posts discussing a trending link, and easily do that in a Norwegian Nynorsk UI. There's more, including details of bug fixes, at https://pachli.app/pachli/2024/12/30/2.9.1-release.html.

The new "Wrapstodon" notifications (if your account is on mastodon.social, I think) have tickled a Pachli display bug dealing with unknown notification types.

It's harmless, but the unknown Wrapstodon notification will appear as a notification consisting of a single translate icon.

Nothing to be alarmed about, you can safely ignore it in Pachli.

The fix is https://github.com/pachli/pachli-android/pull/1154 and should be in Pachli Current tomorrow.

The new account notification filters are rolling out in #Pachli Current today.

This is the first step in providing more controls for people who face #harassment on Mastodon.

See https://pachli.app/pachli/2024/11/25/notification-filters.html for more details.

Feedback welcomed.

With options for show, warn, or hide.

This will be in 2.9.0 (should be end of this month). There'll be some UX changes after based on user feedback.

For example, should there be an allowlist for accounts you don't follow but you want to allow to send you notifications?

Or if a notification / post trips multiple filters, what's the best way to display that and let you interact with it?

If I tap "Show anyway" the underlying notification is shown.

If I tap "Edit filter" (also at Account preferences > Notification filters) there's a dialog to specify what happens for the different types of account.

[#]Pachli account filter work for #antiharassment / #safety is coming along nicely.

This screenshot shows how it works for notifications.

I've got the "Show a warning for accounts created in last 30 days" option turned on (this could also be set to "Hide"), so some of the notifications are filtered.

How do we feel about AI generated image captions in #Pachli?

A user's suggested this over at https://github.com/pachli/pachli-android/discussions/1089.

I've got some initial thoughts, which are in that thread, but I'm interested in other peoples' feedback (ideally in that thread, rather than a reply to this, please).

/cc @stefan who's done research on this, and @dimillian who implemented this in #IceCubesApp

If you use #Pachli Current then, as ever, thank you.

There's a big code refactor launching today that helps move forward the anti-harassment work for the 2.9.0 release.

There shouldn't be any user visible changes to behaviour, but if you see any please let me know.

If you'd like to help with the testing Pachli Current can be installed from https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.pachli.current. Both it and regular Pachli can be installed at the same time.

  1. Open the post editor as the account you tapped, but do not switch the account Pachli uses the next time it's opened.

  1. Open the home timeline for the account you tapped.

Do you use #Pachli shortcuts? I.e., long-press the app icon, and then drag one or more accounts to your phone's launcher?

If you do, and you tap a shortcut, the current behaviour is to (1) open the post editor for the account you tapped, and (2) set that as the account Pachli will use the next time you open Pachli.

Is that behaviour helpful? Would you prefer something else?

Two obvious choices are...

Rolling out to #Pachli Current now:

. "Open boost author" works as intended

. Include a "Copy" button for links/hashtags/mentions in dialogs

. Show links/hashtags/mentions options in notifications

. Use checkboxes when managing list membership

Most of these were from user feedback. Thanks to everyone who took the time to provide it.

If you don't use accessibility actions in #Pachli you can stop reading now.

I've just noticed that if you use #accessibility actions on a post and bring up a list of either the mentions or hashtags in a post they're missing the leading "@" or "#" respectively.

That feels like a bug -- if you're going to copy the mention or hashtag you probably want the leading "@" or "#" to be included.

Is that right?
