I spent a little time browsing the introduction hashtag. What a trip! I was truly fascinated by the variety of people in there. Weirdos and normies, young and old, some cool as hell, some STAGGERINGLY cringe.

Hour one: "None of this makes sense to me."

Hour two: "Well if we are operating on the authority of the king, then I'm going to order this guy to come with us."

Hour three: "Uli, you have the longest effective range with your bow, so you're in first squad. Rexis, you have guiding bolt which means you're also in first squad. Lace, your invisibility spell lasts one hour which should give squad two enough time to get into position, provided we don't encounter a patrol, which is why squad three--"

I am running a D&D game for my in-laws during our holiday. My in-laws have played a bit before save for my FIL (a retired naval officer). His son stuffed a fighter in his hands. He scoffed "I don't know know what any of this means."

... until he saw that his character is a high ranking military man.

I can't help but think that Starlink establishing satellite mobile service in Ukraine is just gonna turn around and sell all the data to Russia

My wife got me a PS VR for Christmas and oh MY god, wow. I'm a late comer to this technology. I tried out Star Wars Squadrons and it's incredible to feel like you're standing next to those giant, iconic ships, and sitting in the cockpit and stuff. I could lose myself in there.

What's the best way to bow out of a D&D game gracefully? I was invited to participate in a D&D 5e game and have played about 8 sessions. It's been fairly fun, but honestly it's just not what I'm looking for right now in a game. I'm not into the high-fantasy city slicking mood these days. I'm in a low-magic, dried rations, 50 foot lengths of rope, phase. OSR type stuff.

The group is great and I don't want to offend, but it's also not how I want to spend every other Monday night.

A buddy of mine told me about an old flick called Star Wars. It sounds kinda cool! Anyone here ever seen it? Worth tracking down?

In other words this feels like a club I've joined, vs Bluesky feeling like... Well, like twitter.

No shade to bsky, really truly. It's delivering value to a lot of people and it does a better job at some things. If you're a full time freelance creator, I think it delivers more value. But as someone just looking to connect to people casually and talk about nerdy stuff, I'm enjoying the vibes over here more.

I've been trying out Bluesky again and there are things about it I like, but others I don't.

I sort of like that there is a wider audience there (my dopamine receptors do anyway). The community is huge and easily accessible, so finding interesting people is smoother. However, that's closely tied to my complaint: it feels like everybody is talking to the virality machine. Over here it feels more like people are talking to their community (at least on my feed).

Since I was playing solo and not recording it, it's amazing how much of my game last night was just me staring into the middle distance while the game happened in my head.

I've been too nervous to record anything yet (never mind I don't have a good setup for it) but I spent some time solo dungeon crawling tonight using my Fallout knockoff rules. Taking a lot of inspiration from @lonehorizons on this.

Before I began I busted out my 7e Gamma World book and converted the first 20 monsters so I could roll on it for encounters. That alone was fun!

Horsefly, Altivo, and Baby began exploring the old shopping center, looking for supplies. It had recently become accessible after a hurricane cleared the long-present radioactive fog.

A gang of four androids were scouring a radio shack for food. Too tough to fight and too alert to sneak by. Baby applied some convincing android makeup and chatted them up: convinced them a radiation storm was incoming, and they should leave the area before their circuits get fried. It worked, they left!

I just saw someone claiming that Mastodon is failing where Bluesky succeeded, but... by what metric, exactly? I have accounts on both and to be completely honest, Mastodon is succeeding by the metrics that matter to me far more than Bluesky is. I have found a good little community of folks here to talk ttrpgs with, and that's really all I want. Bsky likely has that too, but by design or simply luck I have found more of it here, and higher quality. I don't need the whole world's @ available tbh.

10 years ago today I lost my father to cancer. I love him and miss him.

He was an immigrant who came to Canada with his family for a fresh start after the war. He was strong as hell, smart as a whip, and had an unwavering belief in fairness and honesty. He was always proud of my brother and me and wasn't afraid to show it.

I wish I could have shared more time with him. I'll spend some time with his memory today.

This evening my office took a miniature food sculpting course as a team building exercise. It was very fun, and I'm happy with my results!

The meats were made by the instructor,so I cannot claim credit for them.
