the lovely folks at Glass Lab #Edinburgh have more weekend workshops coming up at their unit in Leith https://www.glasslabedinburgh.com/weekend-courses

i took the glass fusing one during sabbatical and got a lot out of it, both in terms of nice pieces to take home, and different structural understanding of an artform

VERY tempted by the leaded glass one, even if i've covered the basics. 180-200 for the weekend, but that includes materials and kiln runs and a lot of coaching time...

https://www.mindbodygreen.com/articles/what-is-shadow-work this seems a reasonable overview, "shadow work" is like Jung but with even more woo. sort of discursive self-analysis, techniques for surfacing the parts of yourself you're not typically prepared to tolerate, or the rest of you doesn't work well with, and holding them up to the light

due to a Guardian article about a dubious sounding spiritual healer seeking to evict a Welsh intentional community from their off-grid idyll to set up a swanky retreat there, now reading about whatever the hell "shadow work" is

made a 256 byte thing that i might like enough not to post here but send to @lovebyteparty instead, even though my taste isn't generally in tune with the scene. love the idea that this year they're running it as "Blind Date", all-anonymous entries

happy to feel i'm getting a measure of control though, setting out for something and ending up fairly close to it, not always wild exploratory gestures :D

scanning this UKRI funding round for "high risk and high reward curiosity-driven projects" in environmental research with an adventurous and ambitious eye

https://www.ukri.org/opportunity/pushing-the-frontiers-of-environmental-research-july-2025/

the combined effort of the fediverse could surely push the frontier so far away it would be imperceivable

it's hard to find out about pending Microsoft price hikes for Office 365, search results are full of people pushing their consultancy or product offerings

heard yesterday that my workplace per-seat cost is set to increase five-fold, which i find it hard to take in, or align with the published information. for mostly public sector funded work, charitable status, that's a big cut!

what are the key pieces that everything else depends on? the single source of authentication? or the skills needs?

have a new t-shirt slogan / potential workshop branding though,

"Better Hardware, Better Research"

could you live with that @libbymiller ? as a spin on this https://www.software.ac.uk/publication/better-software-better-research

Me: i have sworn off BodyCombat classes due to risk of self-injury from going too hard

The January Rush: Yes good luck with that

BodyCombat:

Me: Well i do have this hamstring that needs obliterating

BodyCombat: ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Me: ¯_(ツ)_/¯

... endorphins, a good scene, would sooner regret going too hard than regret not going at all

hm, just had an SMS notification from the GP that reads "Because of the Coronavirus, please do not collect your prescription from the reception but call and we will send to your pharamcy" (not awaiting a prescription, so it went to everyone on the register)

heard mutterings recently about new variants and the need to mask up again (yes, I know one should never have stopped) but this brings it home. A message like this, you feel it should be bigger news, but it doesn't seem to be news at all!

workplace chat on the topic of distillation is at "The wikipedia article is confusing. The loss should just be the Kullback-Leibler divergence between the two models", while i'm wondering what kind of geometry art to make out of it

deep breath, switch off the chat

"My clarity is not your clarity", i like that! It helps consider where your strengths are (flashback to Equate Scotland's career coach: "your strengths are what give you energy")

Some problems seem intractably linked to the psyche of people in a position of power. The urge to throw in the towel, you can't code your way out of that, is strong. But the problem shape inevitably follows you around...

If clarity brings energy, it's not about ignoring the hard parts, but drawing on where you've been

wasn't really feeling the Joy of GeoSocialising but glad i made it out at all, enjoyed the talks, saw the #GeomobEdi usual suspects' faces, met @freyfogle in 3D!

Particularly interesting talk from a long-serving ambulance responder who now runs a startup on the side, doing emergency location assistance, based on all their long experience of pain points. So little love for W3W, a service for when you've abandoned hope!

The other talks were all right too i suppose ;p

signs of storm damage on campus, an entire bus stop ripped out of its moorings, lying on its back

optimistically presume that the bus still plans to stop at the wreckage
