Bash: yes (RANDOM=)

C: no (stdlib.srand)

C#: yes (System.Random)

JS: error (can't seed Math.random)

Lua: no (math.randomseed)

Perl: yes (srand)

PHP: no (srand)

Python: yes (random.seed, cpython&pypy)

Ruby: yes (srand)

is throwing away the sign bit at least documented? Only in C#! Python docs even say "all of its bits are used" but it's a lie.

I didn't expect much of Bash or C, but what blows my mind? PHP acting more sane than Python 🤯

If you can still reasonably do something, now is the time. Top things I found:

• No beef or lamb. Reduce cheese and other meat/fish

• Buy used

• Electric transport (train, scooter, car)

• Buy green electricity

• Insulate your home or, short term, reduce heating costs with a comfy blanket

This roughly halves(!) your emissions

Avif makes smooth gradients where jpeg degrades to blotchy pixels, but at decent quality levels, jpeg preserves the grain that makes the photo look real

Avif takes 80s to export (coudl have been worth it...if the result were better!), with webp taking a few secs and jpeg somewhere <1 second

Didn't test jpegxl, since webp and avif are supposed to supersede that

I'm sure avif and webp prove their worth on other images, but that we haven't universally improved upon 1992 compression surprises me!

Rabbit hole: with new fancy formats like jpeg xl, webp, avif... what to use for a header photo?

The format that:

• puts its dimensions at the front of the file, so the page layout is instantly correct

• sharpens progressively as it loads, no ugly top-to-bottom effect with half the image blank

• is very fast at compressing and decompressing

• beats its competitors on quality at the same file size (n=1, the large header photo I was trying to optimise)

...is good old jpeg from 1992 🤯
