@Erzbet

Thank you for setting up #KpopMonday #BirthdayWishes .

I know I posted this over the New Year, but it really is one of the best wish songs ever!

Every Sunday I look back at the preceding week in kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen Yoon, J, Rei, and Liz-- Rock U (Orig. KARA).

Normally I am not so keen on chants, but what precedes and follows here is some wonderfully melodic writing from Sweetune, providing a context that makes that chanting quite winning. I love the production, and think all the girls’ voices work well together here; Yoon and J are always favourites of mine. For this stage, the school uniform look echoes without replicating the the KARA stages of long ago.

Where would Kpop be without school uniforms, especially the “Clueless” variant? There’s probably an article, or even a book, to be written on this topic.

This raw antisemitism didn't emerge from nowhere.

I'm sure too that others were long ago aware of what the phrase portends, but I will now regard the words "based on my own research" as a red flag!

However tempting it is to dismiss people like Braverman and Truss as delulu fringe elements, they are in fact symptomatic of the decline of old style conservatism and its replacement by the radical right wing.

I don't want to see "Death to America" rallies in Trafalgar Square, nor do I want to see dislike of US policies and US society in general translated into hostility to ordinary US citizens; my children are Americans, and I don't want them to be hurt, abused, or attacked.

What I do want, however, is a clear eyed recognition by the Labour government that the future of the UK lies in Europe, that the values and vision of social democracy are distant from those of either of the major parties in the USA, and that to talk of the "special relationship" not only fosters an illusion but also traps us in an inequitable and dangerous alliance.

Given the ongoing threat of Russia, we are not in a position to simply break off with the Americans tomorrow. What we must do, however, is to start working with other willing and able European countries to establish credible European strategic autonomy.

William Keegan rightly criticized these words from Mandelson as kowtowing to Trump.

The UK needs to keep its relations with the USA diplomatically correct but without a trace of submissiveness, and preferably with all talk of "the special relationship" excised.

One measure the UK should take is to shelve plans for a royal visit to the USA while Trump is in power. The UK government should do this for these reasons:

Mandelson's having to eat his words should also remind us what a bad idea it has been to appoint a political celebrity with a record of controversial remarks rather than a professional diplomat to the ambassadorial post in Washington.

I'm hoping that that something like a stock market plunge gives Trump an incentive to discontinue the erection of tariff barriers.

Even if this does happen, however, Trump will still have damaged the USA's reputation as a trustworthy party to international agreements. His actions will also have damaged the international community as a whole, because he has undermined trust in agreements and co-operation in general.

Trump is very - one might say irrationally - sensitive to the stock market, so he might come up with a pretext for suspending the tariffs if markets take a dive on Monday.

This sensible article on immigration by the always worth reading Martha Gill is much saner than what usually passes for debate about immigration in the UK.

It reminds me that there is probably a book to be written about Migration Watch UK and its founder Michael Green, diplomat, nativist, fan of authoritarian Arab rulers, and hard core evangelical Christian. Migration Watch UK did so much to stir up and then poison the debate about immigration.

I was sitting in Starbucks reading earlier this evening when suddenly my attention was caught by

You stole my heart (heart) <<

It was STAYC -- So Bad! As far as I am aware, there was no kpop that either preceded or followed this. Anyway, I love hearing Kpop in the wild, so I was delighted.

@claralistensprechen3rd

@RufusJCooter

@jamesmarshall

Thank you for your responses.

If you look at my first reply to @msbellows, https://c.im/@jemmesedi/113930522691150566, you will see that I provided three specific examples.

One was an article by Matt Yglesias about a resource widely used in DEI .Are his criticism of that resource groundless?

The second was a reference to a book that has been recommended by DEI offices; I know this, having worked in two institutions where this recommendation was made. Some progressives think this book was wonderful, others disagree. Can we progressives not have a candid debate about this book?

The third was a link to some writing by a philosophy and law professor in which he argued that diversity was not a strong rationale for affirmative action, and that it would have been better to make the case for this policy by appealing to principles of compensatory justice. Although the affirmative action in higher education has been squashed for the moment, the larger debate about the rationale for race conscious policies is both alive and important.

You are, of course, under no obligation to engage in this debate and follow the links I provided. Perhaps, though, it would be worth reading my second response to @msbellows, https://c.im/@jemmesedi/113931969599171711, before dismissing my call for debate.

I was happy to see The New York Times "Ethicist" mention "Exit, Voice, and Loyalty" a few days ago.

More than fifty years after it publication, it continues to shine a light on moral and political questions regarding US history, intimate relationships, political party affiliation...

A must read! It's short too!

This is almost certainly the last stage ever of fromis_9. No wonder members of the audience and of the group are in tears. I will miss them!

Nevertheless, this was a good stage on which to end. Even though "Supersonic" is not my favourite of their title tracks - I prefer "Feel Good" -- it's still a good song. I also liked their styling; the choice of elegant boots and heels, as opposed to the chunky and clunky, was inspired.
