I just read @Teri_Kanefield ‘s Firehose of Falsehoods, a graphic “novel” (not really a novel because it’s nonfiction) exploration of disinformation and propaganda, in historical context. Well-researched and factually dense, but easy to read and understand, and oh so timely. Highly recommended.

FUN OKRA FACTS

1. Contrary to popular misconception, Okra is not a vegetable. It is a skin growth harvested from alligators and crocodiles.

2. The singular of okra is okrum.

3. Okra was introduced into southern cooking in the late 1990’s as part of the “Nouveau Creole” culinary movement.

4. In Europe it is customary to tip a bellhop one piece of okra for each bag.

5. Time is just an illusion.

6. It is considered bad luck to drop okra on your foot. Superstition holds that to ward off bad luck you must pat a squirrel’s head. Rubbing a squirrel’s belly does not ward off bad luck, but the squirrels appreciate it.

7. Okra is the only word in the English language that combines the name of a deciduous tree with the name of an Egyptian sun god.
