I once again find myself needing GPS for another thing in the car. I have 3 already but they are all direct connections. I already have one on a device on the custom canbus so what should I do next?

I finally did it. Activated 5 #sota summits in one day. One very long day with poor propagation. Left home at 0515 and walked in the door at 2100

Have been learning a lot more about aprs this week, have previously just used it to broadcast position but have never had anything setup to listen. Kinda surprised how little I heard in Melbourne while running around today (I looked at the log in direwolf after the fact). Only one igate heard and a few mobile stations

Earlier this year, I hiked two days to activate the rarely activated Mt Marjorie https://sotl.as/summits/VK3/VE-012. It was my first multi day hike through some beautiful country. 5 years ago this would have been unimaginable, still can’t believe amateur radio has made me fitter #sota

Ever since a friend pointed out how cheap shortwave broadcast licences are I’ve been thinking about bringing back a time broadcast station. Not in a situation where I can actually do it, but have certainly thought about it

I do love how casual hams are here

Me: listens to freq for a bit, nothing heard

“Is this frequency in use, VK3XE”

“Nah, has been quiet for the last 10 mins Alan”

This isn’t even the first time I’ve had this happen with the same op

In another addition to @xssfox toot awhile back about postcodes, was doing some sense checking that phone number area codes matched the state (yes I know in AU that doesn't line up, near borders), but I didn't realise that some NSW addresses have a different country code (Norfolk Island +672)

Pulling my hair out last night on a project, connected the oscilloscope and it started working?! Disconnect and it goes away. Notice that just having ground connected makes it work. Yep I forgot to connect grounds so it was oscilloscope ground via mains ground to computer to usb lead to dev board

Interesting results from testing various handhelds at the club last week.

  1. Wow most radio UIs are terrible

  1. Even amongst cheap handhelds most are ok. Tested about ten cheap radios, one out of spec on 2m (iirc 2nd harmonic about 30db down) and the other on 70cm with only 10db down on second harmonic

Had a successful exam session with a candidate who passed Standard last night, and didn't know other hams. Had to once again spend some time reassuring them there is more to amateur radio than what you hear on 80m and facebook

Cool, latest JLCPCB order arrived. Much more worryingly it was delivered by Aramex (I used the slow boat shipping which is pretty quick now)

What do you wish ham clubs had on their website? I may have put my hand up to look after one

Finally got around to testing HF on my EV. If the car is on, no noticeable interference but as soon as I start driving S9+20 noise. This car has no issues receiving AM broadcast while driving so I think I just need to setup an antenna mount at the back of the car

This pride I’d like to say a big thanks to all the folks at @PrideRadioGroup who welcomed me in to their club and supported my introduction to this hobby even though I’m another cishet middle aged dude. I’m not sure I would have stuck around without them and it’s yet another reason to make sure we are welcoming to everybody

Thoughts I really don’t have time for: what if I made a device with a built in keyboard and thermal printer to use as a portable RTTY terminal. Also: I’ve never actually had a RTTY QSO

Things I expected getting in to amateur radio: I’d be very interested in radios and accessories I couldn’t justify spending quite so much money on. In reality: I’m very interested in test equipment I can’t justify money on

Ooh, I'm now an approved assessor for Australian amateur radio exams. One the big reasons for doing this is wanting to create a comfy space for folks who want to sit the exam, including things like the fact I don't ever need to say or mention the name on your ID (I do need to see it though)
