Curly was the king rat of my original three boys. He was least interested in me and tended to put his brothers in their place, so initially I didn't warm to him.

But at some point my brain internalised that they weren't here to perform for me and any and all time I got with them doing what they like is precious. As I learned more about how top rats are, I respected him more and more. He always knew what he wanted and was fair with it. Heavy is the head that wears the crown.

Here is Curly, brother to the three girls I've posted about before. The four of them are the last of their litter, and they are all showing many signs of aging, hind legs degeneration most obviously. They are over two and a half at this point.

I wish I could know the simple joy of a rat stealing their cagemate's hidden treats for themselves.

I love these animals, but they really can be utter twats 🤣

Curly can do both pretty easily and he's more keen these days than when he was younger and made it clear he was only doing it under sufferance 😄

The youngest ones have largely picked up "spin" as a trick, although there's still some thinking about it the first times I try it in a session. I'm moving on to "paw" which went well for the first time today. Rewarding any interaction with my finger seemed to be leading them to think they needed to chew on it, but they came around to putting just one paw on it. It's a good start for their first go!

Morning time with the boys. Variously sitting on my shoulder like parrots or going into a feeding frenzy like sharks when I put some mealworms out.

Curly seems to be socialising with the younger boys a lot more. Neutering them all does seem to have calmed things down in general, but Champers still always has scab marks from bites. Pretty sure it's just Caviar doing it and I'm hoping the neutering leads to long term change in this biting behaviour.
