There are three words in English: courgette, zucchini, & baby marrow. Courgette was borrowed from French, while zucchini comes from the Italian zucchino. Interestingly, both terms descend from the Latin cucurbita, “gourd.” French influenced the west, whereas Italian became more popular in Central Europe. In the East, is the Turkish word kabak. In many languages, the vegetable is referred to as a “small pumpkin.” Spanish uses calabaza.

The word #chickpea comes from Old French pois chiche and #Latin cicer, also seen in Italian ceci, Polish ciecierzyca, and Hungarian csicseri. In Eastern Europe, terms often trace back to Persian "noxod". The term #garbanzo may have a pre-Roman Iberian or Proto-Germanic origin. Mediterranean dishes like falafel and hummus highlight chickpeas; #hummus comes from Arabic حُمُّص, meaning “chickpea.” #etymology #languages #mapologies #linguistics

The term "skyscraper" originates from the words sky and scrape, evoking the image of a #building that reaches or touches the #sky. In many #languages, this name was adopted directly or translated as a calque. However, in others, it evolved into the metaphorical "#cloud scratcher," as seen in #German (Wolkenkratzer), #Romanian (Zgârie-nori), and #Arabic (ناطحة سحاب, Nāṭiḥat al-Saḥāb).
