There are three words in English: courgette, zucchini, & baby marrow. Courgette was borrowed from French, while zucchini comes from the Italian zucchino. Interestingly, both terms descend from the Latin cucurbita, “gourd.” French influenced the west, whereas Italian became more popular in Central Europe. In the East, is the Turkish word kabak. In many languages, the vegetable is referred to as a “small pumpkin.” Spanish uses calabaza.
