Margot Friedländer, 103 years old, #Holocaust survivor:

"We cannot change what happened, but it must never happen again. The democracy and the humanity. There is no Christian, no Muslim, no Jewish blood. There is only human blood. Wir are all equal. We are all born into the world in the same way. Therefore, respect [all] the people."

Very timely advice from @monteiro:

How to survive being online

While you're on that site, do subscribe. It helps keep your keel even and your mind reasonably sound.

And one more #UX highlight example:

In @flexibits's Fantastical, you can quickly reschedule an event to another day by dragging-and-dropping the item from a list panel to a date in the calendar panel above it. And it "even" highlights the new destination date with a prominent border.

Fact is, plenty of #IndieSoftware on #macOS is chock-full of these thoughtful #IxD flourishes. And it's literally delightful to (re-)discover each one them.

Related to the same (#UX) topic:

One thing that makes me truly giddy with delight as a software connaisseur 😏:

When I'm about to submit a feature request, but double-check whether the software already "does that thing." Only to realize that I simply hadn't found it yet, and that it does exactly what I was looking for.

Only thing missing in today's find (in #ShinyFrog's #BearApp) was a keyboard shortcut, and that's a trivial fix via #macOS's Keyboards settings. https://mastodon.social/@jochenwolters/113875499404978801

I've said this before: For truly stellar #UX inspiration, specifically around #IxD, look to indie developers who really care about their product. And who don't even try to over-sell you anything.

Today's example: My screenshot tool of choice is CleanShot Pro. That application has a "drawer"-like window with all the recent screenshots, so you can easily restore them.

I wondered if, in addition to click restore, I could just drag'n'drop an image from that window. And it works. It just works.😎

What's a good alternative to Microsoft-owned GitHub.com as a #git host for non-commercial/leisure #developers who'd like to share #code?

I've seen some people point to Codeberg. Is that a good choice, and are there any others to consider?

Thanks!

😕 https://mstdn.social/@NaMi/113860403378135339

@MonaApp Nasty keyboard input bug in Mona:

When I try to enter a character with a diacritic on macOS by holding the key until the input selection panel appears, the character without the diacritic is already accepted as soon as I press down the key.

The expected behavior on macOS is that when I hold a key down, the input is only completed after I choose an option from the hover panel. That is, in the enclosed video, only the e with the accent acute should appear.

Saw a fellow-attendee in an event who said that they were a "graphic designer pivoting to #UX." 😳

Given the current "UX/UI"-fueled pitiful state of our craft and the related job market, what kind of advice would you even give someone like that… 😬

On occasion, Apple still manages to build something really, really nifty. https://mastodon.social/@davemark/113832688697081101

tl;dr: If you "do #UX", follow @darrenhood. Now.

I can't believe that Darren Hood has only 7 followers here on Mastodon.

Is it because he's sharing plenty of really uncomfortable truths about our craft?

And if so, shouldn't that be even more reason to follow him?

So, yeah, if you're a #UX practitioner in any capacity, do add him to your Mastodon stream!

Reminders about useful features in a software application can be helpful for pointing users to new functionality they haven't discovered yet.

There is a key requirement for these unrequested(!) tips, though: They must include a method to tell the software to never show that tip again.

Otherwise you get something like this reminder in Preview on macOS:

Every single time I open a PDF that contains a form, this thing pops up. And there's no way to disable it. Apple or not, this is junk #UX. 🤦‍♂️

I just watched a talk about #backups that I gave almost ten years ago at Ignite Fort Collins, since I wanted to share it in a discussion forum. And I daresay that it aged pretty well, actually — except, maybe, for that pony tail… 😏

The more I use @panic's NOVA, the more I feel that it perfectly matches my needs as an "occasional aspiring amateur coder."

The one gripe I have is with its documentation, which consists of a "flat" set of individual articles. That makes it rather challenging to learn the app in a structured way. Especially since it seems that the docs don't fully cover all features.

I really wish the good folks at Panic would offer a full manual like the brilliant "Inside Coda" for the predecessor.

Seriously, how far does a company have to go until you stop giving them your money (and ad impressions literally does mean money for them)?

Brilliant and concise explanation of how Large Language Models work, and specifically making it very clear that they're about probabilities, and not about certainty or even actual understanding of their output.

"A Large Language Model is a sophisticated mathematical function that predicts what word comes next for any piece of text."
