Solidarity Network(ing)

We want Varia to be used by people who live in the neighbourhood. Is it already happening but we've never met you all together, we'd love to have a moment to formalise how this can work for everyone. With conversation and food we want to set up ways to organise and coordinate the access for Varia.

How can we help each other across our extended solidarity networks? What are our responsibilities to one another and how can we communicate clearly? This is a gathering to share our expectations and needs for this space that we (can) all use.

Bring a laptop and/or your phone if you want to get an account to help you use the shared calendar and chat with other Varia members and Varia adjacent folks.

If you'd like to use Varia more and would be curious to attend, send us a message at info AT varia DOT zone with [solidarity network(ing)] in the subject line and a sentence about why you'd like to join this afternoon.

Date: Sunday 1 December 2024

Time: 12:00 - 15:00 beginning with lunch

Participation: free, email to join

Location: Varia (Gouwstraat 3, Rotterdam)

Join us for some poetic calm coding next Monday 11th of November, from 19:30-21:30!

Through conversation and experiments, this session will softly start a research thread around this topic, for which we welcome you to bring ideas and experiments of what poetic computing could mean, what it could do and undo.

Vernacular Echoes: Sounds and Collective Expressions

Date: 16.11.2024

Time: 16:00-18:00 CET

Khamoosh is a participatory artistic research project that mediates conservation and restoration by exploring the sonic heritage of Iran through recorded sounds of everyday life; sounds less heard or even silenced.

“We come together in the shared intimacy of sound through the tools of technology and time. Hearing the relationship between sound and language is an ongoing process formed by both well-known and unknown contributors as well as by nonhumans, broadening the listening sphere of our extended collective. Our combined practices include music, anthropology, linguistics, and audiovisual design.”

Golnoosh and Maryam, two members of Khamoosh, will host an event at Varia. They will begin by presenting how Khamoosh as a process-based project operates, and share insights to their own roles within the Khamoosh community. The session will continue with a collective listening workshop featuring carefully selected soundscapes from Khamoosh’s sound archive drawn from everyday sounds, voices, and rhythms focusing on the vernacular.

During this listening journey, Maryam will perform Persian calligraphy - a traditional art form requiring specialized tools such as ink and reed pens crafted from plants —and follow precise rules for writing letters and words. This performance will be inspired by the sounds that embody the vernacular language of emotion and spirit. Participants are encouraged to join in, letting the sounds guide their own creative expressions—whether through drawing, writing, or sharing reflections.

Palestine Cinema Days Around The World - Naila And The Uprising

Date: Thursday, 02 November 2024

Doors: 19:00 CET

Start: 20:00 CET

Location: Varia, Gouwstraat 3

In 2023, Film Lab Palestine had to postpone their Palestine Cinema Days festival. Instead of celebrating cinema in Palestine, they brought Palestine to the world in 86 cities, across 139 venues, spanning 41 countries. November 2nd marks the day the Balfour Declaration was signed, and in an effort to amplify Palestinian voices, we are joining Palestine Cinema Days Around The World and are screening Naila And The Uprising directed by Julia Bacha.

Alongside the film screening Fairtrade Palestine will be selling a variety of products from the West Bank, and we will have anti-colonial, liberation and encampment advice zines available via rot shop to copy and print your own selection from. There will also be silkscreen solidarity shirts from Video for sale. All donations for the zines and shirts will go directly to two families in Gaza, and grassroots mutual aid initiative The Sanabel Team.

Naila And The Uprising

by Julia Bacha

Documentary, 76 mins.

Chronicling the remarkable journey of Naila Ayesh and a fierce community of women at the frontlines, whose stories weave through the most vibrant, nonviolent mobilisation in Palestinian history – the First Intifada in the late 1980s.

Languages: Arabic, English, Hebrew, French.

Subtitles: English.

Varia prints all the news that can fit in SomeTimes. The fifth issue is dedicated to the temporary, the not quite ready yet, the flourishing, and the almost over. Our public programme in 2024 is titled Seasonal Computing. This issue of SomeTimes is dedicated to all its seeds, apple-cores, mini-pears and the flourishings and wiltings that have happened and will still come to be.

In this issue, you'll be able to find out more about how we framed seasonal computing, and what the seeds consist of.

You can get a copy from the physical space, or download it from here: https://vvvvvvaria.org/documents/communication_workgroup/sometimes/SomeTimes_number_5.pdf
