Hashtag games has a prompt tonight: ExtrovertsDatingProfile.

I think I've read enough "extroverts are horrible people" posts in the past few years to last a lifetime, so I'll sit this one out.

Someday I still want to write a longish piece maybe titled "Trump on Campus" about how university upper administrators, despite shouting their social justice apologia at top volume 24/7, are deeply Trumpy.

Crushing labor movements, staunch opposition to democratic processes, authoritarianism, strong-man tactics, student-focused populism, anti-intellectualism, greed, gaslighting, victim blaming, interpersonal domination and intimidation, fiscal irresponsibility, elitism, glorification of profit, destruction of public goods for personal gain... literally the only thing about most university administrations that isn't damn close to fascism is the PR.

Yes, I know there are exceptions. There are also probably exceptions in the Republican Party. The exceptions don't change the overwhelming trends.

Interesting paper from 2012 (and how much has changed since then?): "swing voters" might not actually exist, or at least not in any meaningful numbers. This paper makes a case that "swing voters" are an illusion created by the research methods and statistics used by polling organizations.

Consider a European village in, IDK, Olden Pre-Medieval Times. They're almost all Type X people. A few Type Y people live in town and they are subject to lots of discrimination. The village has a fundamental value: Type Y people are bad and will turn on you at a moment's notice; be ready to harm them or kick them out of the village.

Consider a person who has been treated badly by a few people of Type X. Maybe those people are in a strong situation leading them to treat our subject badly. maybe they're just shitty people. They are only a small proportion of Type X people.

Our subject's experience is "Most of my worst experiences were because of Type X people" and "All Type X people I've ever known have treated me badly."

Making rational judgments about Type X people would be quite hard. Prejudice seems almost inevitable. How do you deprogram this person from their own experience?

"Just don't be a bigot! It's not that hard!"

Except that it is. Human brains evolved to categorize dangers with maximum energy efficiency for a certain level of just-not-getting-killed. This is not the same as accuracy.

One consistent, potent danger for the last 100,000 years or more has been other humans.

Hello, makers and crafters and engineers and anyone else who can help.

How to preserve this?

I have... let's say "liberated"... a sign that was on the side of the road in my small town for a few years, and was eventually pulled down or fell down.

Right when the pandemic started (IIRC) this rusted sign got sprayed with the word "HOPE". Nothing else, just that word. It was visible in a little greenspace between the two tiny towns here. It was on a 10-foot (ish) post next to decommissioned train tracks parallel to the road. I tried to photograph it several times but never really captured it. This sign is meaningful to me.

It fell down or was taken down (suspiciously, right when the state police built a station across the road, though it maybe just fell down). That was almost two years ago.

Tonight I brought it home. It is now my baby. I want to preserve and enhance the "HOPE" graffiti, which has faded in the months sitting in the grass.

the sign is an old slab of steel (maybe 3/16" (~4-5mm) thick? IDK, it weighs at least 40 lbs/~18kg). Very rusted, but also solid.

How to preserve this message? I'd prefer to simply highlight what is there, not repaint anything. Any ideas?

Creating exam questions for intro stats, and defaulting, as I sometimes do, to IQ score examples because they're easy to think through (for me). Remembering several years ago a student asking me, with clear anxiety, whether they were "smart enough" for college based on their IQ score. As we talked it became clear they felt guilt and shame about their full-scale IQ score (they apparently got assessed in high school).

IMO the problems with IQ aren't psychometric (the Wechsler tests are extremely good tests, psychometrically speaking); they are cultural. We bundle some heavy stuff with "intelligence," like self-worth, value to others, and I even think I hear hints of morality judgments, sometimes. cognitive abilities don't work that way, but good luck convincing 300 million people. As a teacher one of the little threads of my teaching is helping students question the meaning of intelligence, not just IQ scores (the question of whether/how much those measure intelligence, and how to even define intelligence is a huge can of worms).

Your intelligence has nothing to do with your worth or goodness. It's been deeply disheartening to see the standard right-wing, white-supremacist, misogynist bad actors (incompetently) using IQ research to try to support their racist, misogynist, anti-LGBTQ rants.

As the cold war ended I really thought we were putting this behind us.

Late because who has time to both do Halloween and make a post to #makershour about it on the same day?

Q1. Who are you and what are you working on?

I'm a guy who just does stuff even though I have no formal training in the stuff I do. It's more fun that way...?

For over a decade I've mostly been the stay-at-home parent on Halloween, helping my kid with their costume (or making it entirely), then not having time to make one for myself, and needing to do academic work (every evening, every weekend... ugh) anyway. I've been the parent at the door giving candy to other kids. I haven't gone out in costume for over a decade.

This year I decided, come hell or high water, I was going to make myself a costume. I decided to make a wizard robe, which would also be wearable at burns (e.g., #burningman #regional events).

I took some pics (a few, at least) of the process and, for a change, actually posted them. Here is a reasonably informative build log on imgur.

(unfortunate thing: imgur doesn't have a way to put alt-text on photos, I don't think; I will have to do something different next time).

My kid and I call this #costume "Fancy Hagrid".

It was fun to dress up and go trick-or-treating for the first time in a decade. It was also predictable that I came home two hours before the kid and their friends.

I'm actually a little shocked at how much effort it took for me to learn anything about storm #dana through #google (or DuckDuckGo). Nothing at all on the first page of either engine when I searched for Dana. Even clicking "news" just gave me various American Danas arguing about politics. It took an extra search term ("storm") to get any info about what is happening in #spain and other parts affected.
