This guy is right. Technology has a way of decreasing accountability and AI is this trend on steroids. They're not superintelligences, they're tools. And if they fail it's on their operators.

Watching Inside Out 2 with a six-year old and discussing it is amazing. I know my Ericson from my Piaget, but to truly see a child not understand the concept of jealousy is mind-blowing. She now gets it theoretically, but it still makes no true sense to her.

The legacy of Dennett is huge and we will be revisiting it for many decades. His most urgent thought for us now is the looming issue of counterfeit people.

"Trump is calling for a bloodbath in front of people who stood to honor bloodshed.  People who have just sung with coup criminals.  People whom he implicitly promises he will pardon if they carry out another insurrection.  And he is doing this in the fascist style of telling a big lie that confers martyrdom upon criminals who try to overthrow a democracy they associated with subhumans."

And another Substack post, this one by Dan Williams, who very neatly outlines the case against disinfo fearmongering.

"Birdbrain" is hurled as an insult, because these brains are small and that supposedly limits their cognition. However, we know that birds are cognitively quite sophisticated. So how can that be, with such small brains? This paper argues it's due to specific convergent evolution of mammalian and avian brains:

What I like about this, is that it solves an actual problem. I have a minor attention deficit and the simple task of 'keeping an eye out for the rain' is a recipe for failure for me. Even if I'd notice rain, I'd have forgotten about the laundry. But my machines will now remind me!

Since about a month I have a Home Assistant server running. I wanted to monitor and manage my home's energy a bit better, but I am increasingly drawn into the home automation rabbit hole.

Today I wrapped up this week's project: a DIY rain sensor, built from a resistance plate hooked up to a Zigbee (leak) sensor. It sends a signal when it's hit by raindrops. Conditional on the laundry being outside, I get a phone notification and a speaker announcement.
