Explosive flat on my way to the climbing gym this morning ☹️. It happened less than a mile from the gym so I was able to walk it the rest of the way. It's on the rear wheel of my ebike (of course) so this is gonna be a nightmare to change. So I'm sitting here between climbs trying to decide how early I should quit so I can tackle it. Or maybe I should try to find a transit route home?

"Karstan, why don't you like interacting with people?"

Well, today at a mandatory in-person company-wide meeting I was the only person masked out of ~120 people. I was also the only person who rode my bike to get there. Which led to being asked these two serious questions:

"Do you have cancer?" (presumably because I'm bald and wore a mask)

"Is your car broken?" (Because I rode the ~4 miles to the event).

Microsoft Widows (work computer) has asked me THREE times this morning to give it access to my location. No and no.

Computers were a mistake.

More reason not to fly. Contrails may have an even greater warming effect than the fossil fuel alone.

Also, the answer to the question posed in the article below? Trains. It's always trains.

The build in progress. I swapped the stock handlbars for some that should be a bit more comfortable. I was about to start switching out the rim brakes for disc when I realized I need a couple spacers first. I'm debating whether I should just order some or take a trip up to Bike Farm and snag some used ones. I need to find a front derailleur any way so BF might be my best choice.

The current levers are super stiff so I'm guessing some upgraded cable housing is in order.

Welp, a little update on the folding bike clamp issue (see above): a little work in the bench vise and some percussive persuasion with a mallet and I got it mostly straightened out. I then snagged a spring and a c-clip from the hardware store for ~$4. And now it works perfectly!

Welp, there's the problem! I'm pretty sure that piece is supposed to be straight.

I bought this used folding bike awhile back and the frame latch didn't appear to be working correctly. Unfortunately, this brand is now defunct (Downtube Nova). But I think it's just a rebranded Tern or Dahon. Anybody recognize this latch type?

I suppose I could try bending it back to straight, but I imagine that's going to be difficult. Plus it's missing a spring.

Long term, I'd like to replace the drive system with a GRIN kit to get regen braking (I don't really need to go faster though, the small motor is plenty for me), upgrade the disk brakes (perhaps to hydraulic?), swap the 27.5" wheels for 26" with wider tires (for the crappy roads in Portland), and swap the fork for one with suspension. Maybe upgrade to one of those fancy suspension seatposts too.

Essentially just upgrade everything xcept the frame :)

I broke 1,000 miles on my Radmission this morning. A cheap ebike can be pretty great (with a little modification).

I upgraded to the LCD screen to get a max 25mph (downhills only, I assure you) swapped out the seat and seat post for something more comfortable, raised the handlebars, and added a 3 speed freewheel/derailleur for climbing the huge hill I live on. A spare battery doubled my range to nearly 50 miles on max assisst.

I need a low-key "couch" hobby. Something relaxing, not physically demanding or overly messy, and that doesn't involve staring at a screen. I do read, often extensively, but that doesn't scratch this particular itch when I've got it.

I tried crocheting but that wasn't quite engaging enough for my ADHD brain.

I like the idea of assembling models, but I hate plastic. And those flat-pack lasercut models don't do it for me.

Welp, time to pull out my list of goals from 2024 and see how I did. They were:

Before I get to how I did, lemme first say that setting quantifiable goals was absolutely a game changer. My ADHD brain loved tracking everything in a spreadsheet. Instant gratification for long-term goals.

Lol, I reported the outage of two "Bikes on Roadway" flashing signs on Barbur Blvd. to Portland Bureau of Transportation. PBOT says they belong to ODOT and forwarded my report. After a delay of weeks, ODOT says "these are managed by PBOT" and forwarded back to PBOT.

What are the odds this gets bounced back and forth a few more times? Maybe I should just go and try to fix them myself?

Here's a quick mockup of what it might look like. 18 feet long, and 8 feet wide (for easy trailerability).
