The fake money aspect devalues the work of marginalized people-- in this case, alt text users. When I work at the intersection of science & accessibility, I expect both those areas of expertise to be compensated. I've published on science in Elsevier journals, & I have also written a book chapter on alt text for data visualization.
Gift cards can't be used by people in all countries, yet accessibility is important to people in all countries & everyone's experience & expertise is important.

Well, it wasn't actually clear what the gift card would be for. I think there would probably be a possibility of Amazon or something. But that's still fake money.
Gift cards are a bad idea for compensation, though they are bureaucratically easier to give out than cash. They can't be used to pay for things like rent, utilities, or health insurance.

Moneybags Elsevier has offered me a gift card to do accessibility testing -- not cash that I could use for practical things or a professional hourly rate, but a lousy gift card. My expertise is worth more and I hope other #DisabledInSTEM folks will consider not accepting this disrespectful offer.

Is there a hashtag on here for when someone has included a minimal alt text that doesn't convey any information? Like "a graph of x and y" "a list of important questions" or some repetition of the post text? I mean, I guess they think they're helping but it feels like being thrown a single crumb. I feel like I can't say anything because "they tried."

The Big Team Science Conference (https://bigteamscienceconference.github.io) is happening October 8-10. I'll be giving a presentation called "I'd Rather Be Talking About Science: Advocating for Inclusion and Accessibility in Open Science Communities" at 16:00 UTC on October 9. There's going to be tons of good stuff about big, open science collaborations and how to make them successful at this meeting!

Love dog behavior data? πΆ πΎπ
The ManyDogs Project has just published our first data paper, which describes and links to all the guardian-provided and behavior data from the consortium's first study on dogs' responses to pointing gestures. Guardians had the opportunity to answer the entire C-BARQ, which could be interesting by itself.
