Man, I miss this guy… Those were some damn good laptops (after a few revisions). The Air was one of the best things that happened to the Mac imho. https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:lzyp6qjpmjwpqgszkplbju53/post/3lfs25rz4ik2n

Does any of the popular iOS clients have a feature like: "let me browse a hashtag feed, but not on my instance, where there's no content, but from mastodon.social, which has the most complete view of the network - but let me reply/like from my account"?…

"Tim Cook has led Apple to incredible success, but his words are hollow. Even the principles he seems to care most passionately about, like user privacy, are in doubt. (…) Most of the employees at Apple still care about these things. Tim Cook cares about appeasing a would-be autocrat and taxing developers in an app distribution monopoly. It’s time for new leadership." πŸ’―

Can anyone recommend a good SSH client app for iPad? Doesn't need to have many features, just don't be crap and ideally w/o a subscription.

I'd assume that joins and lookups by long-ish strings would be slower than by ints, but maybe not, given that with a separate table mapping to ints I'd need to always do an extra lookup there?…

If I was building a database that stores users' posts, follows etc., with the users having external 32-char identifiers, would it make more sense to have foreign keys for user IDs as integers everywhere, with a user table mapping int to ID, or to have the ID strings everywhere and do joins using strings? Would such string joins be slower? πŸ€”

Today in cursed UX patterns: I have a birth date field, and it's not editable manually, only through a date picker, and it doesn't seem to support any switching between years other than just left/right arrows to move by one month at a time… (OVH) 😳

Yup - a bit harsh, but a good explanation how the ActivityPub approach to federation doesn't create a good user experience, unless you're using it in a rather centralized way, somewhat defeating the purpose (I'm also on a self-hosted instance, so I can confirm what's mentioned there)…

Meanwhile, on #bluesky, I can always see all posts, all feeds, all hashtags, all comments, all like counts, all followers…

They should invent a tea-making machine that boils the water, pours it into the mug and puts the tea bag in for you, and then rings an alarm a few minutes later when it's ready so you don't forget about it… I always somehow get lost on some intermediate step

(Details: ~100-150 GB of data, mostly in one "posts" table (100-200M rows), write-heavy (~50-100 posts/s saved), read load is mostly from "timeline" requests which look up recent posts made by any of the followed users)

[#]Postgres people: what's your advice for how I should configure how it uses memory etc.? I think it uses much less than MySQL now (a couple hundred MB) but does way more disk reading, so it could be caching more (this is a 8 GB RAM instance). Right now I have a default unmodified config. #postgresql

Laurens from FediverseReport has published a blog post with a detailed comparison between the ATProto / Atmosphere and ActivityPub / Fediverse's architectures and their approaches to decentralization. Great stuff! πŸ‘

I feel like some ActivityPub-focused people are kind of still waiting for Bluesky to finish and launch something they were building, not having noticed that they already did a while ago, they've just missed it because it doesn't look exactly like what they were looking out for…

I'm trying out #Phanpy, a Mastodon web client, to check out some discussions about #Bluesky here, and it's… not terrible? I like how it lets you quickly jump between threads in the sidebar popup, loads quoted posts inline, and shows threads in a tree view too.
