CameraCtrls is a really nice GTK app for configuring webcams on #Linux, but it would really benefit from using #PipeWire and the #FreeDesktop XDG Camera portal to avoid locking exclusive access to the webcam: https://github.com/soyersoyer/cameractrls/issues/71

Big thanks to @camelCaseNick bringing their "hide the temperature forecast label" fix all the way to acceptance in #GNOMECalendar's dev version! https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-calendar/-/issues/856

Now, in some specific space-constrained scenarios, the month view will showly the forecast's icon. That's a good example of what I meant years ago when I coined the "adaptive applications" term for #GNOME.

New hardcore #PDF rendering performance benchmark for #Poppler:

"Jesus Christ it's a #Lyon (map), get in the car!" :blobnom:

That map takes 26 seconds to render with Poppler on #Linux, but only 6 seconds with PDFjs, or 15 seconds with XPDF: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/poppler/poppler/-/issues/1555

I've profiled the issue on the various Poppler rendering backends, and there are some hypotheses about the slowness. If anyone can help fix this, that would be fantastic.

Ever wondered why websites and web applications keep consuming CPU/power in the background with #GNOMEWeb?

This is the #WebKitGTK enhancement request I have filed to allow stopping the animations frame clock and telling websites that the window is not in focus (so that they can throttle themselves): https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=285167

Not sure how widespread power throttling is among #web apps, but this provides a path for pretty significant power savings in #GNOME, #LinuxMobile & #embedded with #Wayland.

In case this piece of knowledge is useful to someone: if you install a guest OS in #GNOMEBoxes while the host computer's network is disabled (to dodge Windows' stupid SaaS-style "online accounts as system accounts" enshittification push, for example), there is a bug where GNOME Boxes will not be able to automatically set up the virtual bridge for the guest OS to be reachable from your LAN/host via the network: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-boxes/-/issues/1122

Despite normies expressing astonishment (and admonishment) for the fact that I'm not on WhatsApp and such things, I am currently ordering a new batch of business cards and setting up a new traditional phone line extension for my #business partner hitting the pavement, because you know what? It occurs to me that when saving a webpage to #PDF, #Firefox should automagically put the article's title into the PDF metadata, so that it's cleaner to look at in PDF readers and you don't need to do that cleanup work yourself. Filed here: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1939532

The #TechnoLovers "Minimal" radio station is such a fantastic techno music #webradio for working! I've found it to be something I can keep playing for the entire day without getting distracted by it, which isn't always the case with other #techno #trance genres.

I don't understand why that particular radio station is not listed on the official website at https://technolovers.fm, but you can find it in Shortwave and #RadioDroid's radios catalogue :blobcat:

"Switcheroo" by @adhami is a fantastic batch image conversion utility for #GNOME, and it is one of the few ones that actually uses #MozJPEG for encoding #JPEG images. I use it to optimize my photographic images for the web (until #JXL takes over the web someday) emails, or other lightweight image purposes.

Much faster than the Yoga image optimizer (which uses an excruciatingly slow JPEG encoder at the moment) or than encoding images only one at a time with Squoosh!

It is definitely not the biggest problem out there, but it is still technically a (small) performance bug nonetheless. Help is welcome to investigate or fix it. If we're "lucky", it might indirectly solve other issues.
