I'm not sure how to feel about VP Harris asking the senators of 119th Congress to swear to defend the Constitution of the United States of America. Heartbroken? Or do I reserve for three days from now and retain the slightest bit of optimism today that there are enough people who still believe in democracy that we will still have one four years from now?

So many things could have been different that would have given us at least a Speaker Jeffries today, if not a President Harris in three weeks.

It sure sounds like Trump wants to bring back his own version of the Expatriation Act. When Trump says "a wonderful young woman who’s with a criminal," he means a American citizen married to an immigrant, and it's just too bad that she and the children will have to be deported too.

(Read the second link if you don't know the history of American women losing their citizenship by marrying non-citizen men.)

Nobody could have seen this coming. Though I'm sure it's a feature, not a bug, that the by allowing a man who owns an increasingly-fascist social media company to advise the president, he has the power to endanger individual federal employees. This is terrorism, meant to make federal employees quit their jobs so that they aren't the next target of Musk – and to those who are ready to trade in their red hats for brown shirts.

The first sex pest withdraws his nomination. Who will be the next to not be confirmed?

No one will ever have to say the words "attorney general" and "Matt Gaetz" in the same sentence. He can go back to the Florida swamp he crawled out of now.

This is not singling out Texans for electing terrible Republicans. There are 48, soon to be 52, other Republicans in the Senate and no one following me likes being represented by any of them. In addition, every single one of our 50 states including blue Hawaii has had either a Republican governor in my lifetime. Only three of those (DE, WA, OR) haven't had one this century.

If we have to have a terrible Cabinet, at least this is a silver lining. Though I'm not sure that missing your day job to go watch a SpaceX launch is why your constituents sent you to the Senate. Great job giving Ted Cruz another six years when you could have had Colin Allred, Texans.

President Biden has now appointed and had 220 federal judges confirmed. If the Senate can confirm 15 more before January, Biden can surpass Trump's first-term number.

Paraphrasing Alex Wagner and Faiz Shakir's discussion about these potential cuts on her show: why are Republicans talking about cutting SNAP (food stamps)? Why aren't we talking about people working full time at Walmart and McDonalds and needing Medicaid and SNAP to supplement their low pay because they can't otherwise afford medical care and food? Make Walmart and McDonalds pay a living wage to their employees. They don't need another tax cut.

Maybe Nancy Mace should spend more time making sure that women can get proper health care and less time worrying about what's in people's pants.

A congresswoman or staffer who is trans is using the restroom for the same reason you are, not for nefarious purposes. Let people pee in peace. Sarah McBride is the first congresswoman (at least openly) but there are already trans staffers using restrooms. They're not hurting Mace or anyone else. They're just being themselves.

When you're a president who has been found liable for sexual abuse, having an attorney general who lives under a cloud of suspicion of sex trafficking surely isn't a dealbreaker as long as he's a loyalist.

No wonder Trump wants recess appointments. Hopefully a few Republicans including new Majority Leader Thune find Gaetz repulsive enough to reject the nomination.

Who bet eight days on how long Trump would wait before β€œjoking” about running in 2028? β€œFigure something else out” to stay in office beyond two constitutionally-mandated terms. Like Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping, Robert Mugabe. Great company.

I see Trump will continue to nominate well-qualified people for important roles.

John Bolton, former UN ambassador, suggested Elise Stefanik needs foreign policy experience so she can run for president in the future. Biden's UN ambassador, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, is a career diplomat nominated because of her experience. It's probably elitist to think that a president might pick someone with any previous relevant experience for a job rather than that they flatter him.

Michael Tomasky asks two questions: would Trump have gotten any traction in 2015 without Fox News? (his conclusion: no)

And what if someone had moved here this summer from a country where they had no prior exposure to our politics and were only exposed to Fox. What would they believe about Harris and Trump?

That's his explanation for the rightward shift of the country.

He implores rich liberals to take action. He doesn't say what. I assume buy media too?

I keep hearing from the media that every demographic group voted more Republican than in previous elections. Not quite all. According to the National Election Pool (which sampled too few Jewish voters in 2020 for comparison but has 2016 and earlier exit polling data), Jewish people gave a greater percentage of votes to Harris than for any president since Bill Clinton.

Jewish voters broke 79% for Harris. NBC News's larger poll also says 78%, while Fox News says 67%.

It's hard to decide who the worst person associated with the Trump campaign is, but you probably can't go wrong if you say it's Musk (who worked illegally under a student visa while not actually enrolled in school and lied to immigration, offenses for which American citizenship can be revoked, which has nothing to do with this story about his weird lottery, but it's always worth mentioning Republican rules-for-thee, not-for-me).

More people dying from lack of medical care in Texas must be a feature, not a bug according to Greg Abbott.

My tax dollars can go to hospital care for anyone who needs it. I don't care if they're citizens, green card holders, or undocumented. Immigrants contribute more than they take, and we should all be part of one health system anyway.

Texas doesn't elect a new governor until 2026, but vote blue and get rid of terrible Republicans at every opportunity.

New Republican voter suppression tactic: mail voters forms asking them to delete their own voter registrations, scaring them into thinking they are no longer eligible to vote.

The system to check if you're registered in a former state works. I just checked in my last state and I've been deleted from the rolls, not that I'd have considered going back to vote there too. Who would other than a Trump staffer?

Such a slimy operation.

I hope The Atlantic still gives a free article view or two a month. Anyone in a swing state considering a protest vote because Harris isn’t sufficiently pro-Palestinian needs to consider this:

You can protest Harris all you want. March on Washington or in the streets of your city. Draw her attention and public attention.

Trump wants to jail protesters. He’s talked about turning the military in protesters and shooting them.

Which America do you want to protest in?

This is how a newspaper editor makes an endorsement for president. It’s not surprising that El Nuevo DΓa endorsed VP Harris after Trump’s warm-up comedian Puerto Rico, but this is such a thoughtful analysis of why Trump does not deserve votes and why Harris is the right choice. While the LA Times, Washington Post, and USA Today shrug, El Nuevo DΓa knocks it out of the park.
