Our Mastodon instance burningboard.net mostly get traffic from Germany (no wonder, since wer're a mainly German instance)

Statistics generated from Loki+Grafana by parsing the local Nginx logs.

We don't use any third party service for tracking of our users and we work in a privacy-friendly manner and do not share information with others.

Database size of a Mastodon instance with 100 active users and multiple relays connected: 15 GB

Performed some maintenance work on the burningboard.net Mastodon instance:

• Debian updates / errata installed

• PostgreSQL update to v17.2.1 installed (+pg_repack and full vacuum of the database)

• Update from Grafana 11.4.0 to 11.5.0

• Rebooted system (kernel update)

• Cleanup jobs checked and dead jobs removed from the Sidekiq scheduler

• SSH secured behind WireGuard VPN (SSH only via VPN tunnel)

• Encrypted backup made with proxmox-backup-client to pbs (proxmox-backup-server) and backup verified.

Our small ARM-based server still copes surprisingly well with the whole federation and the amount of data with 100 active users 🙂

Einige Wartungsarbeiten an der burningboard.net Mastodon-Instanz durchgeführt:

• Debian Updates / Errata installiert

• PostgreSQL Update auf v17.2.1 installiert

• Update von Grafana 11.4.0 zu 11.5.0

• System neu gestartet (Kernel-Update)

• Cleanup Jobs kontrolliert und den Sidekiq scheduler von toten Jobs bereinigt

• SSH hinter WireGuard VPN gesichert (SSH nur noch via VPN Tunnel)

• Verschlüsseltes Backup mit proxmox-backup-client zum pbs (proxmox-backup-server) gemacht und Backup verifiziert.

Unser kleiner ARM-Basierter Server kommt mit der ganzen Federation und den Datenmengen bei 100 aktiven Usern noch erstaunlich gut klar 🙂

Running Linux Kernel 6.13 now on my primary Fedora 41 machine. 6.13 comes with some sweet optimization and bugfixes for AMD RDNA3 GPUs :-)

(Note, 6.13 has not been released for F41. I'm running a pre-release koji build!)

Morgen erste Dienstreise in 2025. Natürlich wie immer mit der Deutschen Bahn.

Nur 1x Umsteigen (vom Nahverkehr in den Fernverkehr) und dabei 21 Minuten Puffer. Das könnte dieses mal sogar klappen.

Running the DeepSeek 7b model locally on my ThinkPad T14s AMD with the integrated Radeon 780m graphics card. It's fast but quite challenging for the iGPU.

Beta version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 (RHEL10) running inside of Podman with Distrobox on a Fedora Linux 41 system.

When you've installed subscription-manager on the base system (in this case Fedora) and activated the system, then the entire RHEL repositories can be used in the RHEL container (and not only the UBI part).

Great for testing software under the pre-release of next RHEL!

Successfully deployed a single node Kubernetes cluster with K3d on my Valve Steam Deck.

Does it make any sense? Absolutely not. But I wanted to try it out and now I can bring my own Kubernetes wherever I go 🤪
