Hello Hachyderm! Thank you for your patience as we gathered the necessary data to write our announcement blog post regarding Threads.

The short version: Hachyderm has defederated from Threads.

Specifically, this is due to Threads changing their moderation policies and moderator guidance (see press cycle) to be in direct conflict with Hachyderm.

For the data and explainer, please see our announcement blog post:

We'd like to take a moment and welcome two bots (one with a plus one) that have migrated to our server from BotsInSpace that we feel align with our server ethos and support community:

Please welcome both @PleaseCaptionBot and @selfcare ( + @selfcaregentle ).

Both @selfcare and @selfcaregentle post frequent, small, tips reminding us all to take care of ourselves. Drink water. Take your meds. Stretch for a moment, etc.

Hello all! We've been talking with a few BotsinSpace accounts, as the instance is being shut down, to see if they feel like Hachyderm would be a good home for them. Not all the bots we're looking at are specific to tech and are just good for the soul. We'll be posting more here as we add their accounts.

There is a lot of work to do! If you're technically savvy or want to learn more about operating distributed social media systems at scale, we're always looking for motivated volunteers to come help out. You don't have to be an industry veteran to keep making Hachyderm better; we welcome all skill levels and backgrounds.

Hello Hachyderm! Although we don't normally make posts of this nature, we did want to extend an extra thank you for helping us catch a high volume spam account that made its way onto our server. The account existed only 3 hours thanks to your help before it was suspended. Thank you to everyone who contributed to community safety, both on and off Hachyderm! :hachyderm: 🎉

Since we've been asked a couple of times about the .io TLD in light of recent events, we wanted to make sure our users know that we do have a few parked domains. So if anything does happen to this TLD, we will be able to migrate. :hachyderm:

For anyone wondering "what's this about" - the UK government has returned the British Indian Ocean Territory / Chagos Archipelago to the Republic of Mauritius. There is a lot of speculation about what this may mean for the TLD:

Also one of our fellow Hachydermians drew our attention to this: great job Hachyderm for providing alt text on images! A whopping 67% of posts have alt text. This is wonderful as alt text, especially well written alt text, is an excellent way to show community care.

If you're curious about more ways to create accessible posts, please look at our doc page:

Helloooooo, Hachyderm!

The 4.3.0 upgrade is pretty much complete! We're running a few background re-indexing tasks over the next hour or so, but otherwise you've probably noticed the site is back up. If you're visiting via the web, you'll see a whole new design for the Mastodon UI!

You can read more about 4.3.0 here:

https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2024/10/mastodon-4.3/.

As always, please report any issues (or ideas!) in our community space on Github: https://github.com/hachyderm/community.

Happy Hachyderm-ing!

A quick message from the mods :hachyderm: :

As we're approaching a major election cycle in the US, we're working hard to stay ahead of bots, other types of inauthentic accounts, spam, and so forth. That said: please report what you see if you happen across these types of accounts, as it improves our ability to keep this type of content from reaching our server.

Thank you!

Reminder to Fedi admins that are moderating the spam wave that started last week: @iftas has been maintaining a list of instances, keeping track of which are still impacted, and doing outreach to the impacted instances to assist:

There's also this resource for helping prevent spam account sign ups: a list of a few thousand disposable domains:

Thank you all for your patience, and much love to our lead eng and his family. :hachyderm: ❤️

There is an open ticket on Mastodon as having the user see the blocked domain in punycode may be confusing. To read more:

The answer is: the blocks work normally, but the domains are encoded in punycode. That means that when you block domain:

dömain.com

It will appear in your blocklist (either individually as an individual user or in the blocked list if you're moderating the whole server) as:

xn--dmain-jua.com

You don't need to take any additional action, this is just what the domain looks like in punycode.

We recently received a question about domain blocking - either on the instance level or when an individual user blocks a domain.

The question is: what happens when I block a domain like dömain.com ?

Reminder:

You can mute, block, and report users (or their instances) by expanding the meatball menu on a user's profile page.
