TIL: ‘auto-mode-alist’ also applies to ‘play-sound’, and ‘play-sound’ thus fails if the format you try to play is associated with a mode (e.g., ‘player-ready-mode’) in ‘auto-mode-alist’. I think this is really a bug in ‘play-sound’: it should always open files literally.

But I currently don't have the energy to look into it.
