Is there a name for the thing where somebody uses their own incredulity/ignorance as proof of something? E.g., "I don't see why people are worried about..." to imply that it's mistaken to be worried about the thing.

There's the term "howler" for a mistake so glaring that people just have to laugh at it. I know shit about these games, but it's wild to watch experts spot howler after howler as Musk claims to be a top player.

I haven't heard confirmation from anybody that this AIS data upload is in good shape. On the other hand, I haven't heard otherwise, and 4+ months of effort and expense for data I don't personally want is about as far as I'm prepared to go. So the S3 buckets are getting nuked on Tuesday. If anybody cares about this data, now's your chance.

I am seeing some defeatist nonsense with the upcoming Trump inauguration, talking as if America is over. I say: Fuck that!
I will not obey in advance. I will not spread despair. I will not quit trying to push things forward.
America has always been flawed, and has faltered many times. But MLK Day reminds us that there are American ideals that are worth fighting for, even when things seem hopeless. Especially when things seem hopeless!

And looking at the source code, I see that "disable-esc-to-close" is set to "true", meaning that somebody went out of their way to make this a pain. With something as prominent as Gmail, you can bet this was a high-level choice. A choice to prevent people from accessing their email until they activate Gemini.

One analytical lens I love for interactions is "consent vs control". Here you see a Gmail pop-up for their GenAI "assistant". Do I want this? No. But my choices are "Learn more" and "Continue". My consent is assumed, making it a controlling interaction. You see this a lot these days, like where you choices aren't yes and no, but yes and "ask me later". It always makes me wonder what kind of personal relationships the people who do this have.

Yes, I too want everybody off of Facebook. And Twitter. But I think the only way we get there is by having compassion for the people still on those platforms.
We need that compassion so that we can understand what makes those platforms valuable and build alternatives that truly satisfy people's needs.
And we also need it in talking with those people who remain. Do you feel smart because you saw the problems early and got on to Mastodon? Me too, and good for you! Feel smart by all means, but please don't act superior. Approaching people with contempt has very limited power to make people change, and can easily get them to dig in.
And personally, I think that low-compassion interactions driven by status and dominance are a big part of the systems that Musk and Zuckerberg succeed in. Using those tools carelessly might change who's on top, but they won't solve the problems.

I see people scoffing at the notion that leaving FB is hard because that's where their family talks. That if you really cared, you'd go to the effort of being more directly in touch.
For me this misses how much social media enabled connection with a wider circle of people. And how those wider, looser connections matter.
As a concrete example, take my mom's cousin Barb. I had met her a few times over the years. When my mom was dying, Barb really showed up and helped, and it mattered a lot to me. After, we connected on Facebook. I got to really appreciate her and what she did for her part of the world, a hardscrabble slice of rural Michigan.
When her husband died, I heard about it through Facebook and immediately made a substantial contribution to the funeral fund. Before social media, I would at best have heard about it weeks later through the family gossip network, and I might not have heard at all.
Dropping connections like this is a loss, and pooh-poohing that is an ugly look.

Have an example of, "All models are wrong, some models are useful?" The first one that comes to mind is "sunrise". The sun's just sitting there, while I'm on a self-shadowed bit of the planet that's moving toward the sun. But it's easier to think of myself as stationary, so "sunrise".
What others come to mind?

It's 11°F out, so I'm not going to go look. But one of my neighbors has spent the last 15 minutes literally spinning their wheels on the ice in their driveway. Buddy, at some point you have to get some sand or salt or something! #chicago

Once my fingers got tired from cleaning, I switched over to figure out why it won't start up. As often happens, the batteries were left in too long and corroded. I cleaned it up a little, but it may need an expert. One cool thing is that they made good service manuals for it. #pinball

Today I'm working on a Williams Gorgar from 1979, the first talking pinball machine. It's very worn and dirty. In the second photo, I've cleaned one of the legs and you can see how poorly this has been maintained. #pinball #chicago

Hi, all! After a lot of expense and shenanigans, this data is now available on the Internet Archive. At 1.5 TB, it was too big to be in one piece, but you can find the two pieces here: https://archive.org/details/@wpietri
Could somebody sanity check this? Before I delete the AWS buckets, I'd like to make sure this is in good shape. Maybe look through the folders, read the README, download and verify at least a couple of the daily data files.

Looking up something else, I came across this amazing Wikipedia page. She has generated an enormous amount of confusion about the facts of her life, such that Wikipedia has 8 possible birthdates and 5 locations, as well as questions about gender assigned at birth. I truly admire this level of chaos. And it's a great example of how Wikipedia deals with ambiguity by just documenting it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amanda_Lear
