I'm trying to find a sci-fi novel about a trio of scientist-engineers who make a machine that can teleport matter? I think post WWII. The first success is when one drops a wrench in it and the wrench shows up in the crawlspace above him, then they mess with it and discover a way to aim it. They use this effect to spy on people with invisible cameras and do some interplanetary market manipulation, then make an FTL drive that creates a gravity point at a set distance from the ship.
