I considered including firewall tools like Glasswire and Little Snitch. Hard to decide what tools to prioritize. I defaulted to the easiest stuff.

Also perhaps didn't say enough about full disk encryption.

I would be curious to hear any feedback or suggestions you might have.

Of course there are tons of great guides that already existed created by @eff and others. Perhaps I should be linking to more existing resources in here too.

This article started as a note doc with a list of apps I would suggest to people along with short descriptions. I guess I wrote this primarily just as a continuation of that same effort for me to organize my thoughts to give my answer to this question.

Still feels both too long and Maybe it needs a clear TLDR with some bullets at the top? Can something be both too much and not enough at the same time?

Surveillance and hacking technology continues to be a focal point for venture capitalists and militarized law enforcement agencies...

"Forbes reported in 2021 that Paragon offered services to hack phones that allowed access to apps on a target’s phone, such as WhatsApp, Signal, Facebook Messenger, and Gmail. Paragon’s spyware product, called Graphite, has been likened as a competitor of Pegasus, made by NSO Group, and other similar spyware products...

In October, Wired reported that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (I.C.E.) had signed a one-year contract worth $2 million with Paragon to acquire a “fully configured proprietary solution,” which included licenses, hardware, warranties, maintenance, and training. Last month, The New Yorker cited a Paragon source who said that the ICE deal came after a vetting process in which Paragon reportedly demonstrated that it had controls in place to prevent customers in other countries from hacking U.S. residents."
