Nothing motivates me to write more blog posts about synthetic data than synthetic data vendors being defensive in my LinkedIn mentions whenever I say things like "there's no silver bullet" 👀

Just published a ✨ new blog post ✨ on synthetic data generation! In which I dismantle the marketing-fueled myth of synthetic data as a silver bullet, and talk about fundamental trade-offs instead 📊

This was stressful to write and even more stressful to publish, but I've had to have this conversation too many times with too many different people, and it seems worthwhile to have everything summarized in a single place 🫤

I wrote a blog post about Diffprivlib, a well-known differential privacy library.

Weirdly specific gripe: when searching "fireplace" on YouTube, it's annoyingly hard to find atmosphere videos that are real wood fires. A ton of it is AI and much of the rest is gas fires pretending to be wood logs burning 😒

I'm out there writing blog posts like "an evil adversary could design clever attacks to extract some personal data from LLMs!" and meanwhile Google's Gemini is just leaking the user's home address, unprompted, while playing chess 🫠

Maybe for the shortform social media audience I should have chosen one of the spicier diagrams as a teaser image 🤔

I wrote a ✨ new blog post ✨ about privacy in AI: five things that privacy experts know about AI, but that might not be so obvious outside our community 😶‍🌫️

The extra hilarious bit is that the Frankfurt - Basel SBB train in the middle… stops at Basel Bad Bf 😶

Totally normal itinerary you've got there, Deutsche Bahn.

This is so absurd and frustrating. Why can't everything be under a single standardized API so booking systems can just figure out the best prize for a given route?!

I think it's because each booking system is unaware of the other's saver tickets options. So booking on DB always gives you the regular cost for Swiss trains and vice-versa.

Been buying train tickets from Zürich to German cities for close to a decade. Just today I realized that I could get cheaper tickets by booking the Swiss and German parts separately.

One of my 2025 resolutions is to lower my own bar to write blog posts — being more OK publishing something that isn't perfect.

I am completely failing at this so far.

Someone sent me an email asking me questions, ending with "and here are a few pics of my cats for compensation". Such a cheap way to push me to prioritize their request over other people's. Urgh. I'd be offended if only I weren't busy fawning at their cats and answering their email right away.

I'll end on this one, because @naominovik is also my major author discovery of the year. Also by her, I've read Spinning Silver this year and I'm halfway through Uprooted, and they're both absolutely fantastic. At once a familiar and fresh look on the fairy tale genre. I can't wait to read the rest of her books next year!

The Scholomance trilogy, by Naomi Novik (@naominovik) 🧙‍♀️

Come for the hilarious take on the "magic school for teenagers" genre (with an annoyingly dashing hero and a protagonist prophesized to be a world-destroying dark sorceress), stay for the compelling and dark world-building and the masterful pacing across the three novels.
