Italy, stop waging war on refugees and migrants.

The Louise Michel is back at sea
Our crew assisted a boat with 30 people on board
Yesterday evening the Louise Michel departed from Sicily towards the Central Mediterranean. During the night our crew was alerted by the civil emergency hotline @alarm_phone about an overcrowded boat south of Lampedusa.
On the way there our crew found a wooden boat with 20-30 people on it and stayed until #guardiadifinanza za took over and brought everyone safely to #Lampedusa.
Meanwhile tragically another boat in distress, spotted and alerted by #frontex , has most likely been intercepted.
Frontex has been proven to be involved in illegal interceptions and pushing people back to #Libya.
The Louise Michel continues sailing in this area and is ready to assist.

Winter in the Mediterranean
High waves, strong winds, and low temperatures can make the already extremely dangerous journey across the Mediterranean even more deadly than it already is.
Boats capsize more often and rescues can be more dangerous. The constant wet and persistent cold can quickly lead to hypothermia, which if not treated quickly can lead to a horrendous death.
The fact that the danger of fleeing in brutal weather is widely known demonstrates that people are fleeing their homes and making these journeys as there is no other choice.
We need safe and legal routes for all.

Abolish Frontex and its racist border policies
The European border and coastguard agency (FRONTEX), founded in 2004, has been a key actor in the militarisation of Europe’s deadly and racist border policy.
"With a 5.6 billion euro budget, Frontex will soon have an army of 10,000 border guards able to own and use firearms. Across and beyond the EU, the agency deploys ships, planes, drones, patrol cars, and radars; it takes active part in deportations; it helps third countries surveil and police people on the move." @abolishfrontex

2024 a year that raises hope, despite regression

Freedom Of Movement for All.
Seems we have to fight for it ourselves.
Migration is natural. For many creatures, and for humanity, it is a crucial strategy for survival. Migration always follows the way towards better living conditions, and away from violence, hunger and climate change.
Today, the imbalance of migration from the global south towards the north is deeply rooted in the decades of exploitation and oppression by "western" colonialist powers. People and natural resources continue to be used by these powers to maximise profits, with no regard to either social or ecological consequences. Global inequality and injustice are the main reasons for migration.
To fight for the freedom of movement for everyone, means to fight for equal and unconditional human rights for all. It means equal access to, and fair distribution of resources. It means to fight against exploitation of people and nature, and against the private property of common goods.
We will repeat it, until it’s implemented:
Freedom of movement for all!

Solidarity with the people of Syria
After 50 years, the brutal regime of the Assad family has been torn down. We stand in solidarity with the people of Syria who have been targeted and suffered under the brutal Assad regime, that have lost loved ones or are still missing from the thousands the regime has kidnapped and murdered.
We also stand with all the Kurdish communities in Rojava and elsewhere who have fought for years for a democratic confederalism. A fundamental emancipatory and feminist idea which is now again heavily targeted by Turkish and other Jihadist forces.
For freedom and equality for all.

International Day for the Abolition of Slavery
Today and every day we stand against any form of slavery. An estimated 50 million people around the world are trapped in modern slavery, enduring human trafficking, forced labour, sexual exploitation, and forced marriages.
Many vulnerable individuals, especially refugees fleeing conflict and persecution, fall prey to traffickers. Human rights organizations have exposed that refugees are routinely bought and sold by violent networks within Libya, with strong ties to the so-called Libyan coastguard.
It’s time for the #EU to end its support of armed Libyan militias and put human rights first. #Libya is not a safe country.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, 1948 represented a milestone in the recognition of the universal rights of every human being following the unprecedented horrors and mass expulsion of World War II. The Declaration declares that all rights and freedoms it sets out are universal, and without exclusion due to race or ethnicity, religion, gender identity, language, political or other opinion, nationality, social origin, property, birth, or any other status.
Today, 192 member states of the United Nations have committed themselves to this declaration. And yet, governments and international organisations have continually undermined and neglected the obligation to protect refugees.
Across the world, people are forced to leave their homes; fleeing conflict, persecution, climate change, or a lack of basic care. While seeking safety, refugees and migrants often end up in camps, detention centers or on the streets, while states, such as the EU member states, work hard to prevent people accessing the right to seek asylum.
We call on all states to uphold their commitment to the UDHR, and to respect and protect human rights for all!
Everyone has the right to a life free from persecution.
No one is illegal.

End Violence against Women
Violence against women and girls is a global epidemic, taking physical, sexual, and psychological forms that devastate lives and communities.
Today, we stand with women and girls around the world to demand change.
Smugglers exploit women’s vulnerabilities, coercing them into exchanging sex for transportation or placing them in cycles of debt and abuse.
Shockingly, one-third of abusers were reported to wear uniforms, exposing the systemic failures which allow those that are supposed to protect, to abuse.
Violence against women and girls is a violation of human rights. No woman or girl should endure violence, fear, or silence. End violence against women now!

55 people have drowned in devastating shipwreck in front of the Canary Islands
In the first days of November, 55 people have died along the migration path to the Canary Islands. Another 1,786 people rescued in operations near Lanzarote and El Hierro.
The migration route along the Atlantic has become an increasingly common path to Europe, with its primary departure points in southern Morocco, Mauritania, and Senegal.
With the escalation of violent interceptions by Libya and Tunisia, with the support of the EU, other dangerous migration routes have been used by people seeking safety in Europe.
For those trying to reach Europe from Senegal, the crossing is nearly 10 times longer than other Mediterranean routes.
Many boats, without proper navigation systems, are veering off course and some are drifting across the Atlantic to the shores of Brazil, taking hundreds of lives with them.
These are not numbers. These are human lives. The right seek asylum is a right protected by international law.
Rest in power.

Italy's Deal with Albania must end now!
Despite recent court rulings against outsourcing #asylum processes, the Italian government has transferred another 8 people on the move to #Albania that had been rescued by the military ship, #Libra.
Shortly after, an Italian court decided a second time, that this is illagal and ordered to transfer the survivors to Italian mainland.
Tensions between the Italian government and the judiciary are escalating since the first transfer of 12 people rescued at sea to Albania was claimed illegal by the court. In this case, all survivors were transferred to #Italy after that ruling.
Freedom of movement is everybody's right. Stop the Albania deal now! Human rights for all!
