Finally trying out @penpot for some design work and immediately I get stuck on not being able to add a border to just one side of a square element. This felt like an odd feature to ignore for so many years…?

Would love a second opinion on Internxt for cloud file storage. Their pricing (and security) looks very appealing.

And you thought love was the only universal language.

I think I just managed to update my Akkoma instance.

I appear to have some settings wrong for the S3 configuration though… and that is likely why my images aren’t displaying. Like my avatar...

So I'm playing around with making my own theme for Ghost and there's one thing I really want to get right:

Ghost has built-in functionality for setting the width of images to break out of the article container, resulting in images that span the full width of the viewport, alternatively about 50% between the content column and the viewport edges. This is set in the Ghost editor and simply adds class names to the figure element. It's up to me to code the output.

What is best practice for accomplishing this with CSS? Because the solutions I'm finding aren't very neat. And they for example add a horizontal scrollbar to the browser...

Thanks for you help :)

Edit: added an image for explanatory purposes.

It was a weird friggin' year. My open heart surgery and new mechanical heart valve of course a central part of it. Thankful for medicine keeping me around for a bit longer.

All I know now is my intent is to write more in 2025. And listen more. Looking forward to the experience.

Take care, all. ❤️

Remember this folktale? ”Posing as weavers, two con-men offer to supply the emperor with magnificent clothes that are invisible to those who are incompetent or stupid.”

We are now waiting for enough people to point and say they can’t see the ”AI”. There are so many emperors wearing nothing at all.

”You have many data shadows today. These are vague summaries of you as a person that authorities, banks and insurance companies use to assess your suitability for things like employment, benefits, sick pay, discounts and credit. In many contexts, you are merely a risk, the question is how big, and a 'data-driven' organization places great importance on your shadow to determine this.!”

”Reducing humans into data points immediately feels scientific and awe-inspiring to people in power. Infallible. Human complexity becomes neat, binary and void of gray areas. Information is encoded in templates known as profiles. If those profiles are correct, fair or relevant becomes secondary. As long as we can output a number through some formulaic assumption. Numbers are so much easier to read than people. And difficult to dispute. Especially when you are kept from tracing their origins.”

When many people limited their flying, "generative AI" made it possible to burn large amounts of fossil fuel, deplete water and contribute to e-waste right from the comfort of their own homes.

Humans are innovative that way.

Geoffrey Hinton winning a Nobel prize was not great for educating on the real risks of machine learning.

Commentators on tv and radio here in Sweden are now on and off continuously about AI having to be reigned in because it’s getting smarter than us.

Anyway, today is the Nobel Day.

More and more tech giants controlling our everyday lives but not making any profits eventually has you realising that profits are not the motive. The control is the point. Money is made elsewhere, kept away from us, while keeping us all docile.

The point that algorithms exacerbate inequality even when not specifically programmed to do so, and even if there is no obvious bias in the training data, I really want to explain more in my next article. If you know of good examples, let me know.

I'm not without examples. Many variants are exemplified here:

I keep hearing…

"Everybody needs to start using AI!"

and…

"Ha! AI is everywhere. If you're using the internet you're almost certainly using AI."

Well, job done then.

Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

I often put "AI" in quotation marks as I think it’s a flawed expression that includes everything and nothing, selling a vision of machines that do not exist. Every time I repeat it, I give it legitimacy, which hurts a little.

I believe a fairy falls ill every time someone says "AI" with a straight face.

Folk verkar trötta på digitalisering. Men då kallar vi det AI de nästkommande 10 åren istället. Så blir allt bättre.

Oj vad slut jag är…
