Rigby is 1 year old today! 🐾 1️⃣ 🥳 She is growing up to be an amazing dog. She’s starting to exhibit “real dog” behaviors (though there’s still plenty of foolish puppy mixed in too 🤪).
She’s always ready and willing to play. Her most favorite thing in the world is a ball. 🎾 Even better…a ball on the beach. 🏝️
She’s a mighty fine couch cuddler. She'll paw at our legs to demand...ahem, request...to get under a warm cozy blanket. 🥰
Rigs is an insanely curious pupper. Which means she gets called a nosy-butt pretty often. I'm VERY thankful she's too short to be a counter-surfer. 😆

Well, my dogsitter tells me that my dog has learned to play with a blind cat. Apparently my dog drops the ball in front of the cat, cat pushes it away, dog fetches it, and then starts all over again.
In this photo I just hear my dog thinking “it’s your move.” Hysterical.

The pupper is 9 months old today. 🐾🎈
In the last couple of weeks she’s learned how to give a shake (paw), and to catch a ball that we toss to her.
She’s also taught herself to keep careful watch when my husband is cooking. Her head perks up when she hears him chopping vegetables, and then she runs as fast as she can to the kitchen. Occasionally she gets a carrot or something. Pavlov for sure LOL.
She’s quite a little athlete, and she loves balls. Though currently her game is more like fetch and then keep the ball - we’re still teaching her to do a reliable “bring it.”
The doggy teenage months are challenging for sure. With my last puppy 13 years ago, I remember saying “I can’t wait to meet my adult dog.” We’re to that point now with Rigby. But we love our crazy little nugget. 🐾 🥰 🐾

Since the ankle was still swollen and painful after a week, I went to our local medical clinic (here in our town) and saw the general doctor working the clinic. She sent me for an x-ray (right in the same clinic). Afterwards she said -- and I quote: there are problems so we need more imaging. I was able to get a CT scan scheduled for 2 days later in Faro (45 minutes away). And then I booked the first available appointment with an orthopedic doctor here in town, which was 3 days after that. The timing for getting things scheduled was pretty fast.
The cost so far has been a fraction of what we would have paid back in the USA. The doctor visit was €11. The x-ray was €16. The CT scan was €27. That seriously blows my mind.

Gotta watch out for "dangerous" curbs in Faro. Two weeks ago I fell and I have a little fracture in my ankle (the fibula). So I thought this might be a good time to chat a bit about the healthcare experience here in Portugal.
First of all, healthcare is a human right in Portugal. It's in their constitution. Amazing concept for us Americans, right? Compared to the debacle that healthcare is in the USA that is. There's a public healthcare system in Portugal which is underfunded and shortstaffed. The husband and I have private health insurance and so far all of our experience has been with the private healthcare system. The cost for my health insurance here in Portugal is about 1/4 of what it was in the United States. (I used to pay ~$600 per month in the USA for a high deductible plan--as a self-employed person my health insurance was high. Whereas for my husband it's approx. the same cost because he used to be on Medicare in the USA.)

My oh my oh my, I will be happy if my dog never ever brings me another fish head that she finds in the grass by the river. So gross! On the positive side, she didn’t try to eat it. Rather, she apparently wanted to gift it to me. In this photo I’m explaining the situation to her after we got home. 😝

Rigby is 7 months old today. In dog age, that means we’ve got a teenager on our hands. 🐾😳🐾
It’s interesting to observe how her ability to concentrate and cooperate is good sometimes and noticeably worse other times. But you know what they say…progress isn’t linear. For example, we’ll have a fantastic walk where she listens pretty well…and next time she’s so distracted by every little thing (ooh leaf in the breeze!) that it’s like she hasn’t learned any leash manners at all. There are also times when she knows exactly what I want (like a simple ’Rigby come’) and she willfully ignores me…though she’s dependable when there’s a treat in my hand. Go figure. 🤪
Rigs is super affectionate. She absolutely loves going places, so she’s going to be an excellent traveler (she aced her first visit to a hotel last week). She’s developed a fondness for balls and for stealing my spot on the couch.

I admit my dog has a playlist. 😝 Here’s what we’ve got so far…
All That She Wants (Is Another Baby): Earworm I had for days leading up to when we got to pick Rigby up from the foster family.
Here Comes My Girl: Rigby struts around like little dogs do. So the hubs is always saying “Watch her walk” from this song.
Maggie May: We’ve adapted some lyrics… “The morning sun when it’s in your face really shows your beard.”
Papa Don’t Preach: The hubby sings “I’m keeping my baby” to me a lot, particularly when Rigby is being a little naughty.
Papa Was A Rolling Stone: Because nobody knows who daddy was.
Strut: Because she struts around like she’s in charge.
Suddenly I See: This is the opening song in Devil Wears Prada. Rigby was watching tv & jumping around joyously when it played. (I’d share the adorable video if it didn’t violate multiple copyrights.)

This little lady is going in to be spayed today. In Portugal, many businesses open later than in the US…we drop off little nugget when the vet opens at 10:30 am. Which means we have 4 hours (!) of her thinking mama is completely incompetent for not feeding her this morning. 🤣
