I think the time bonus skews the score a bit, boosting the scores more than the difficulty level does in later, harder puzzles.

I got these answers almost as soon as I realized what the clue word was. Would I have gotten it faster if I had had the clue word from the start? Probably not because the 7 letters I had were a big part of the solve.
