Had a pretty awful day as mentioned but I did finish work early enough to finally write the daft wee Stargate Atlantis one shot that’s been bugging me for a while.

If anyone fancies a bit of fluff - https://archiveofourown.org/works/62615314

For the Capaldi lot - just had an email from Last Night in Glasgow saying they are currently pressing his album and will start shipping in a couple of weeks! @strangeseawolf @DoctorMonkey2 @floofpaldi

If anyone is in the mood for a short bit of Doctor Who fic, I have a new one up on AO3 - https://archiveofourown.org/works/62309452

Something that has been bugging me for a while and needed to be written - what did the Doctor say to Bill's mum to get her to agree to the photos?

Again, apologies for being a bit quiet. Still sick. But I have actually managed to write a bit of something and started to post it on AO3 if anyone's interested - https://archiveofourown.org/works/61844959

Just a bit of daft mirror-universe Stargate stuff, but it's been fun to do.

Apologies for not replying/boosting lately. I discovered one of my pain meds was basically trying to kill me and had to start a whole new regime, which is going great, only it now looks like the evil med also did some damage to my heart, to the point where I can’t walk across the room without being exhausted.

Currently off work and spent a lot of days in bed unable to do much at all. I’m better now and even got some writing done, albeit Stargate Atlantis fanfic but words are words.

What's your favourite part of the writing process?

I think it's either the world building, especially for fantasy or sci-fi, creating worlds and characters. Tolkien was my gateway drug into fantasy, so I can't help going down the linguistics route as well.

Or it's those times when I start typing, look up and it's six or seven hours later, I've done over 10K words, and although my back will be aching by then, I have part of a story.

Was going to bed but got an email from DPD that they were bringing a package tonight, and it turned out to be this lovely hardback edition of Herald Petrel by @strangeseawolf - which is available from Amazon if anyone else fancies a “dystopian but fun”™️ sci-fi story. #bookstodon #books #scifi #dystopian #spaceopera

[#]WordWeavers Are real people ever the basis for characters?

Aspects of my immediate family make it into many of my stories. I actually think one thing that makes me a much better writer than I was when I started out is I now have that life experience and have met a pretty varied and wonderful (and not so) set of people, so it's all a data store. I've never based a character completely on someone but I'll pick and choose traits and characteristics.

[#]WritersCoffeeClub Why did you choose past / present tense?

I write past tense probably 90% of the time. It's how I learned, so it feels more natural to me.

Having said that, I ended up changing Panelák to first person present, something I've never written before, because somehow the book just needed it. I feel that works particularly well for supernatural and horror where you experience the MC's life as it happens, with that added urgency.

Used present for a few shorts now too.

[#]WordWeavers How pretty is your MC? Are they prettier than you?

Malásek is actually described as a "pretty boy" by other characters. He's handsome in a sort of Greek statue sort of way, but he's been teased for being "effeminate" (this is the 80s), so he thinks that's a downside. In reality, he's gorgeous.

I, on the other hand, am ugly by any standards. My face is too fat, my nose was broken when I was a baby so it's crooked and my eyes are weird. Plus I have Scottish teeth. Nuff said.

[#]PennedPossibilities Have you ever mixed a foreign language into your writing?

I write in a mixture of English and Scots in the collection I'm working on. Panelák also has a bit of Czech in it, but really only words that don't translate comfortably into English, and those are explained in context.

Must admit, having been raised on Tolkien, I am a sucker for a conlang, and use them in all my fantasy and SF.

[#]WritersCoffeeClub What is the best thing you've done (or might do) to a reader's state of mind?

I have a very silly series of LOTR inspired stories on AO3, as in REALLY silly, written for a laugh back in the early 2000s, and I decided to re-edit them and post them on the new site. Someone messaged me through Reddit to say that they had bookmarked those stories and whenever they felt a bit low, they turned to them to get cheered up. Job done, in my book. More than than I ever expected.

I really annoy myself sometimes. Just spent ages searching through my camera roll for pictures I was convinced I saved of the hotel in the Highlands I've used as the model for the one in this story, only to find it's on one of the open tabs on my browser.

[#]WordWeavers Share an #IndieAuthors book you love.

I'm going to go with one a few people have mentioned, but which I was privileged enough to see develop and follow in parts on AO3 before getting the beautiful Kindle edition. When I can afford it, I want the hardcover.

Herald Petrel by @strangeseawolf Very much looking forward to any sequel that might appear.
