"First mover penalty" in the context of the Online Safety Act demonstrated with a small website;

https://efic.email/

(Why yes, I did have fun reading a Thesaurus)

I've worked out what annoyed me about OFCOMs "yes you can block the UK but other countries might pass the same law so it's better you comply".

Other countries can't fine me £18,000,000 or put me in jail.

Were Roskomnadzor to tell Ablative to take something down I would refer them to Arkell v Pressdram just as I do for spurious DMCA takedowns (looking at you Datto...).

Here's to hoping the UK gov has just piled Internexit on top of brexit.

Idiots.

Into the belly of the beast; I'm currently sat in coffee shop a short walk from OFCOM HQ waiting for the Online Safety Act event to open its doors.

I've done a lot of reading over the weekend and as much as I'm reasonably confident that one needs to be hitting over 700k/month users before having to worry about most of the controls on harmful content it'll be good to get some clarification.

I'm also considering setting up a UK based Mastodon instance and chronicling the journey through compliance etc.

Between Brass Horns Tor Exits and literally everything about Ablative Hosting I'm pretty sure I can handle running a >500k/user Mastodon instance on my terms.

@neil I've just read your risk assessment for the "Mailing List".

The mailman software generates webpages for each email sent, e.g. sent by you; https://mailman.lug.org.uk/pipermail/sclug/2024-October/007336.html

If an email "publishes" a web page is it still an exempt service?

To go one step further, what if https://pornby.email published what it received by email?

New from Brass Horn Communications; https://over18.uk - the worlds first Privacy Focused Age Verification system that relies on the passage of time.

No need for AI inspected selfies, no uploading passport scans or bills, no phrenology. Just plain simple time and patience.

What makes it privacy focused?

Site operators download a list of hashed account IDs on a regular basis and perform the matching locally on their server - no communication with the over18.uk servers is needed. No HTTP referrers, no API keys, no signing in, nothing.

We'll never know what websites you visited, what websites checked your account ID, hell, we won't even know what websites use the service.

So... 18 year old bearer tokens?

Yes, we've learnt nothing about the problems with JWTs

What if you lose your bearer token?

Signup for a new one and wait 18 years again!

What's stopping someone sharing their bearer token?

People do that? We'll put something in the T&Cs

My @mntmn MNT Pocket Reform has arrived and it is gorgeous.

tmux, sway, vim, ssh, gpg, firefox all installed out of the box which is 90% of my workday sorted (git, tor & a password manager rounds it off).

ssh-keygen + Yubikey for ed25519-sk worked straight away.

5G wifi with IPv6 working fine (I forgot to order an IX/RJ45 so doing that in a minute).

The handbook (incl schematics and BOM) is a lovely touch.

An hour in and I am loving the form factor (imagine larger than a Psion5MX but smaller than an eeePC/OLPC then reinforced with a solid aluminium chassis).

The tiny keyboard and its layout is proving a challenge (but then again so was the Vortex Core (40%)).

So far my Pinebook Pro and PineTab2 were shelved in favour of returning to an x230 but I'm really hoping that the Pocket Reform is here to stay (I'm already eyeing up that RK3588 upgrade...)
