Last night was The Gig, the one where I played the Benny Goodman solo on Sing Sing Sing pt 2. We actually had a bonus gig on Sunday night where we played the same set. I got thrown off messing with mic setup so I only got about 90% of it right. But last night, there were no mic problems and I got 98% of it right. I was pretty happy with it. We have one more gig where we'll do this same set again, so I'll have one more shot at it. Turns out practice pays off.

When I started working on this Benny Goodman solo a month ago, I thought I was going to have to tell the band leader there was no way I could play it at an acceptable tempo. I just got through it at 210 bpm with about 98% accuracy. Realistically, we'll probably play it 195-200. Turns out practicing really does pay off. We rehearse it with the band tomorrow night, then one more run through of the concert, and then the concert itself. Feeling like I can actually do this.

New home-built router table is terrifyingly loud and I'm pretty sure the RPMs for this router are way too high for this application, but the setup works like a champ! Learned some important lessons about grain direction, but was able to start finishing curves on parts for the Adirondackish chairs. Will definitely have some patching to do on some of these parts.

Got up to 170bpm with about 90% accuracy on the Benny Goodman solo tonight. Sheet music says 208-220. I'm shooting for at least 185. More practicing for me.

Haven't practiced this much since college (30 years ago). Nothing like getting to play a classic Benny Goodman solo for an upcoming gig.
