And this is why stuff never gets cleaned up. It's never a priority. "We're too busy to clean up." Then something critical happens and it takes three times as long to figure out what the fuck happened, because you're having to eliminate 1000 things that shouldn't have been there in the first place.

Technical Manager: Nobody ever does cleanup on ACLs and permissions.
Me: Yeah, I know, that sucks. By the way, this ticket we approved, you should remove that permissions grant after a year.
TM: Am I supposed to set a calendar reminder? This is going to stay in forever.
Me: Um... well, yes, but I suppose I can set a calendar reminder to remind you.
TM: That works for me.
I'm sure it does.

I have done it, I have done the thing. Somebody asked me about something, and I said "I wrote a presentation on that 15 years ago, here"

Last boost: Haven't watched it all the way through yet, but the first 10 minutes are stellar. In higher ed we do have to think about nation states as well, but agreed our biggest risks are still "standard" cybercrime, especially BEC and the more prosaic "I'm in a meeting, I need you to buy me some gift cards."

A few weeks ago, tired of telling people that when we talk about "we need to make systemic change" that doesn't mean "everybody but YOU," I made a bookmark shortcut called "A TOADA SO" that linked to a news story about me, um, "springing into action" in response to an attempted ransomware attack.
Today I decided that's just going to be my bookmark tag for other HEs getting rocked. "This was only not us because we got lucky now quit it!"

Me to a guest I'm helping to host: our vacation is pretty generous, people start with 15 days, when you've been around as long as me it's closer to 30
Her: some staff at my institution start at 50, in my grade you actually only start with 40 though.
Her grade is higher than the ones who start with more, even.
North American work culture is whack.

Sysadmins: when I switch from talking about "endpoint management" to "asset management," that word change is not because I'm confused or the two terms are interchangeable. They are not, although assuring the former is nearly impossible without the latter.
For my next miracle, I will produce a reliable asset management system that is completely independent of any human input.
