“A central question within attachment theory is how best to conceptualize the relationship between different attachment working models… The current study tested competing hypotheses replicating the work by Dugan and Fraley (2022), extended to a large sample of nonbinary adults (N = 2,811)… These findings highlight the generalizability of attachment theory to diverse, nonbinary gender identities.”

Want some accessible history? Check out Netflix’s miniseries Hitler and the Nazis: Evil on Trial (2024). It reconstructs how they combined bureaucracy, propaganda, and coercion to achieve violence. Something that struck me, as a psychologist with chaotic fashion preferences, was how quickly they were able to get everyone - including civilians - wearing matching clothes (deindividualization to make it easier for “average people” to choose to enact atrocities)

[#]uiuc #aclu “The University has added several vague and arbitrary requirements and set violation thresholds that are far too low,” the letter, obtained by the Tribune, said. “As a result, student protestors have and will continue to be subject to an unpredictable disciplinary regime that effectively puts their academic careers at risk for engaging in protected speech.”

Last year, I got talked into covering an undergrad intro python for neuroscience course, despite not knowing python or neuroscience. It forced me to learn python (still marked safe from neuroscience) and it went pretty well overall.

There’s enough space from it now that I can ask which of these would have been a better response to the reasoning I was given for being asked despite being upfront with my limited qualifications, which was:

“You seem like you could teach programming.”

Edited; I originally misidentified the case

This headline is about CU Boulder computer science professor Henry Tufo; “the university could not provide more information on exactly what Tufo did that led to his dismissal.”

Today I am grateful to be teaching

It’s a tangible thing, talking about problems and solutions with people who will be in positions to make a difference, whether on a large scale (programs, policies) or a small one (individuals).

And I can’t put it off indefinitely because it’s at a set time :-)

Reminder that intolerance of intolerance is not a paradox. Tolerance is not an absolute ethical stance, it is a social contract. If someone chooses to not participate in the social contract of tolerance, they do not get to benefit from it.

This semester I’m teaching a new-to-me course, Psyc 567 Personality Assessment. I’ve organized it to follow the #openAccess AERA/APA/NCME Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing (2014) instead of a textbook. The syllabus and list of readings is here: https://jaime.phd/personality_assessment/

I hate that journals don’t just make old-timey classic articles freely open access. There are so many copies out on the internet, I doubt that’s where the revenue is.

Pop psych article led with psychopaths preferring black coffee, then admitted the study just looked at 1) liking bitter things and 2) psychopathy traits (continuous); “psychopaths take their coffee black” was a leap. So there’s only one thing left to do #science

3/ Example peer review assignment for a paper: https://jaimederringer.github.io/human_behavior_genetics/course_project/5_peer_review_papers.html

…and for a project (I have used this setup for infographics and programming projects): https://jaimederringer.github.io/human_behavior_genetics/course_project/6_peer_review_popular_sources.html

I swap the projects, gather feedback, and return. Every student gets a lot more feedback (especially in 100+ person class) with greater variety of perspectives than they would have from just me.
