just culled this together and thought i'd pass along. favorite albums of 2024 divvied up by loose genres (indie/rock/folk, then jazz, then ambient). each submission includes a brief description. here's hoping 2025 lives up to 2024's lofty output!

my fav "new" #jazz albums from 2024, with brief descriptions. listed in the order I heard them.
vijay iler, linda may han oh, tyshawn sorey - compassion (piano trio is classy-yet-kinetic, spare, resplendent. Trends broader and more emotional by the end.)
mary halvorson - cloudward (complex with harmonic layers of vibraphone, trumpet, trombone, and her guitar, yet serene)
Jack Silverman quartet - prince of shadows (guitar-led vignettes with doom and gloom vibes)

only took me 23 years to realize one of the better tunes from gordon and kottke’s clone (along with inside in, a fire album) was a roy buchanan cover from 29 years prior to that. phish-adjacent hot take: mike’s solo output during the hiatus was right there with trey’s solo debut, quality-wise.

A plug for @rowjimmy and his latest album, As We Know It, which showcases his uncanny songwriting ability to drop knowledge nuggets while spinning unassuming yarns. Thoroughly enjoyed his most recent studio output! https://jmhart.bandcamp.com/album/as-we-know-it

Shout out to @GoldenBrown for another superb #Prairiewolf effort. I'm not much of a physical media guy but a $10 digital download to support phenomenal music is money well spent. https://prairiewolfcf.bandcamp.com/album/deep-time

sorry for the spotify link (still trying to persuade my family we need to switch to apple tbh) but…
track 4 on the new #gillianwelch and #daverawlings album is insanely great. repetitive harmonic picking gives this ambient vibes, a la droning acoustic raga jams you probably already love, like elkhorn, etc. but i noticed listening more closely this morning that dave is mimicking bird songs with his guitar during some of the verses, especially 1-2 minutes. absurdly good!

looking at #mondegreen weather. mid 80s in the afternoon with dew points in the 60s is kinda sweltering, imo, but for being 10 miles from the beach in august, totally typical. 70s in the evenings. some 30% chances for pop-up showers and storms saturday and sunday. given this summer tour, there's a 100% chance of #phish awesomeness.
