Australian Economics

I keep hearing expert economists debating when our Reserve Bank will cut interest rates. They are living in fairy land - the Reserve isn’t going to cut rates before an election!

In death there is life… This mossy log has been there for a few years - and is providing a home for myriads of tiny creatures - and of course the moss!

This is the second best beach - in the world! Caught this on the news this morning - but missed which was the best beach. It’s Norman Beach on Wilsons Promontory in Victoria, Australia - after school holidays finished.

Koalas sleep for around 18 hours a day - so finding one awake - and smiling for the camera - is pretty rare!

Illawarra Flame Trees are not native to Victoria, but one of my neighbours has nurtured this one to maturity. When in flower at this time of year, it’s really spectacular!

On a really hot day in Victoria, I thought a photo of cold water might be welcome. This is Toorongo Falls in the Central Highlands - so that water is freezing!

It’s a pity these Yellow Rush Lillies are’t bigger - they are really pretty! This is true macro - double life size - these flowers are around 5mm across.

A walk on the beach at dusk. After the heat of the day this is a great place for a walk - with no holiday crowds! Frankston beach, near the pier.

Definitely Summer holiday weather - warm and humid, with showers and storms every few days! Just like Christmas.

Mission accomplished - one more sale on Alamy! This photo of Vervet Monkeys scratching each others' backs sold 50 greeting cards on Red Bubble a couple of years ago. I guess the message still works!

Having a good year for Alamy sales - just need one more to break my record. This photo of a female Gang Gang giving her partner a love bite just sold to Australian Wildlife Conservancy magazine - nice to have a local sale.

I thought a flower with a name like Christmas Bush would flower around Christmas - until I checked the EXIF data - the photo was taken in April! The plant is called New Zealand Christmas Bush - so maybe New Zealand celebrates Christmas at a different time to us?

It’s Spring - and the birds are busy feeding babies. This Eastern Yellow Robin is very cheeky and stole a mealworm from the Lyrebirds at Healesville Sanctuary.

Dancing flowers? These Spider orchids are doing a duet to celebrate Spring. Their common name is Southern Spider Orchid - but they are not common!

Spring breakfast - bacon and eggs. These pretty flowers are early Spring bloomers - so finished by now - but they do light up the gloom of the forest.

You know it’s Spring when the ducks are out with their chicks. This pair of Wood Ducks (Mum in the lead) had 9 chicks originally, but, sadly, the foxes prey on them, so they’re down to the 5 I can see in this shot. The chicks are prone to wandering off, so there may be more.

Another Spring bloomer - a pair of Ear Sundew flowers. These vary from deep pink - like this pair - to almost white. Their sole purpose is to attract insects to the sticky leaves below - where they get eaten. These were at Baluk Willam Reserve in Belgrave, but they’re very common in woodland everywhere.
