@soatok Your thread " irrelevant personal stuff" was very moving. I didn't find it irrelevant, I found it to be exactly the type of thoughtful, personal post that elevates social media beyond an endless stream of videos or promotions or bickering.

This is what matters. This is what makes a difference. If you ever find yourself in Guernsey (a tiny island near France that nobody has heard of) then please let me know so that I can give you a hug in person (if you would be comfortable with a hug)

A very long shot, but is anyone else attending STAG 2024 in Verona tomorrow/Friday? It would be nice to meet a real live Fediverse person! :)

In two evenings, I've brought back/recreated my website (only contains one blog post), my media server (single user), and my forgejo instance (also single-user). Not hugely complex tasks, but ones that have a meaningful impact.

I had a crack at Nextcloud this evening, but I think that'll need to be weekend job, by which point hopefully the app in the store will be working nicely.

I took the plunge and switched to TrueNAS scale earlier this week.

I've had problems with several apps though: nginx-proxy-manager and Nextcloud both repeatedly ran into problems: the former, when I tried to set up a simple reverse proxy, and the latter when I tried to use datasets external to the app.

I imagine these will get resolved soon though - the app system has undergone quite an overhaul for this release (which came out today! I installed an RC).

In TrueNAS Scale, does the official Nextcloud app handle database version upgrades (e.g. pgSQL 15 -> 16) transparently/automatically?

I have a two-user instance with SQLite running on TrueNAS Core and it seems fine, but when I looked at moving to Scale 24.10, SQLite didn't seem to be an option.

I think I might be able to get it to work, but I'd like to limit the customisations needed to make it work.

Meeting 71 of WG14 (the ISO C committee) is now complete, and I've written a blogpost with an overview of the proposals that were highlights for me: https://www.ethernull.org/blog_posts/2024_10.1_wg14.html

With thanks to @AaronBallman

@erisceleste

@thephd for writing the proposals I wrote about!

Obviously there were plenty of great papers, these were just a few I particularly liked. C23 is really nice, and I think C2y is already shaping up to be something quite special. :)

@mwl My copy of your book arrived in Guernsey! (Small island just off the coast of France)

It's delightful!

The co-author on my latest paper is brilliant: he's waded through the draft and updated a lot of places to improve the clarity of figures and the prose. Everything he's changed makes so much sense that it's a little embarrassing to have not seen them beforehand!

What's even better is that he sent me an email asking how I felt about the changes and explaining the motivation behind them.

Is this normal for academic collaboration, or am I just lucky?

Fairphone have made smartphones, earbuds, and headphones. Fairbuds was a good name, but "Fairbuds XL" was questionable, though certainly more distinctive - and therefore less chaotically amusing - than "Fairphones" (for "Fair Headphones"). I'd love them to make a tablet too - something that could rival the Galaxy Tab Ultra's 14.6" screen.

If Fairphone were to make a tablet; what should they call it?

@WeAreFairphone - your expert opinions would be greatly appreciated!

My Fairphone 3 has been in decline lately - struggling to handle certain simple applications, significant input lag, browsers slowing it down etc.

Last night I finally caved and bought the Fairphone 5. I really wish it had a headphone socket (and I maintain a glimmer of hope for the Fairphone 6, @WeAreFairphone ...), but I don't think there's an alternative if one is looking for an ethical smartphone.

If there is; please don't tell me as I've already paid for it 😝

I've written a Python script that collects the contact details of all MEPs (Members of the European Parliament), along with their national/EU groups and saves them to per-country CSV files.

You can download it from here: https://codeberg.org/patrizia/mep_contact_details/releases/tag/v2.0.0

It makes it easy to send an email to all of your country's EU representatives (e.g. with Thunderbird's "Mail Merge" addon https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/addon/mail-merge).

Please boost and add tags if you think it would help people find this.
