Steffen Köhn & Nestor Siré: Handmade Networks

➠ book presentation and conversation with the authors · Jussi Parikka and Vanina Saracino

@pankegallery, Wednesday, 29 January 2025 at 19:00

– organized in collaboration with @aksioma – Institute of Contemporary Art, Ljubljana

https://panke.gallery/event/steffen-koehn-and-nestor-sire-handmade-networks

Handmade Networks presents a body of research-based artworks by Steffen Köhn and Nestor Siré. Their collaborative projects explore how the Cuban people have compensated for their lack of internet connectivity by building massive alternative infrastructures, such as grassroots community computer networks or offline “sneakernets”. They document how Cubans defy material scarcity by recycling or appropriating obsolete technologies, creating digital exchange platforms on messenger applications, or engaging in play-to-earn blockchain games. By examining the resilient and resistive potentials of these vernacular infrastructures, Köhn and Siré's work also reimagines such networks as viable alternatives to the capitalist, consumerist digital infrastructures controlled by an oligopoly of Big Tech companies that have homogenised the global internet.

The book, published by Aksioma in 2024, opens with an essay by Cuban science fiction writer Erick J. Mota and closes with a conversation between educator and researcher Bani Brusadin and the artists.

panke.gallery SOUND NIGHT 15

Thursday, 30 January 2025 from 8 pm – open end | random dice roll

https://panke.gallery/event/panke-gallery-sound-night-15

featuring Rotary Farm (Evan Roth) | Fetter [live] | Rollercoaster Kai | Sakrowski | Nimrod Astarhan | Mezzy Shivers [live] | live visuals Clusterduck | Rumstedt | Holk

As part of ♥ U̶n̶o̶f̶f̶i̶c̶i̶a̶l̶ V̶o̶r̶s̶p̶i̶e̶l̶ 2̶0̶2̶5̶ we celebrate our 15th panke.gallery SoundNight. We have two live acts + four DJ sets and three live visuals for you. It's a simple party to come together and have some good moments in this dark winter times.

➠ @sakrowski ambient sounds

➠ Rotary Farm (Evan Roth) Farm to table beats, hip-hop, instrumentals, loops, and sunshine.

➠ Nimrod Astarhan is an artist, technologist, and educator working in sculpture and digital media. Fresh from Chicago's experimental scene to Berlin, and especially for the panke family night, they excavate and reanimate forgotten West Asian disco gems while weaving through genre-fluid soundscapes.

➠ live Fetter makes clubby self-destructing noise pop to dance and weep to. Oscillating between ethereal and pounding, their all-hardware, largely improvised live sets take listeners through a foggy wilderness of saturated rhythms and menacing synth lines, a golden voice guiding the way through. Fetter is the musical project of Berlin-based multimedia artist, Jessica Tucker.

➠ live mezzy shivers Raised in New Jersey, the early memories of Mezzy Shivers are flooded with deciduous trees and murky rivers, pot-holed highways and flickering street lamps. Her media intake consisted of horror films, bubblegum pop, and fantasy books. As a result, discovering her work is akin to stumbling upon a dark and dreamy rabbit hole.

➠ Rollercoaster Kai is a sonic explorer, smashing musical boundaries by remixing genres into mind-bending narratives.

On Curating Academy Berlin

@sakrowski: "Exhibiting and Contextualizing Net Art"

– talk

Friday, 15 November 2024, 6 pm

ZK/U Berlin

Siemensstr. 27

10551 Berlin

https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZcvc-2orzouHdIa4n-BbsXP0YndvFOnsyiF#/registration

In Exhibiting and Contextualizing Net Art, #Sakrowski reflects on his efforts over the past twenty years to find appropriate formats for exhibiting, contextualizing, and documenting net art. As an art historian, he is committed to creating a historical record of this avant-garde movement and the phenomenon of net art from its inception. His interest goes beyond opposition to the then-dominant paradigms of the art world—such as authorship, authenticity, and originality. Net art also addressed crucial questions arising from societal change from the post-industrial era to what is now called a networked society, developing a specific aesthetic in the process. In addition, the ephemeral and fragile nature of net art has made its preservation even more important.

In this talk, Sakrowski will introduce various exhibition formats and talk about his open curating platforms such as grid.org and openAR.art, as well as his online exhibitions on curatingyoutube.net. He will also provide insights into his last ten years as a curator at panke.gallery in Berlin. In addition, Sakrowski will present his interview and video formats, which are designed to document and provide context for net art.

WE NEED TO TALK!

The #BerlinIsCulture action alliance is calling for a standing demonstration in front of the Brandenburger Tor at Platz des 18. März on November 13, 2024.

This is our response to the main committee meeting, which will negotiate planned cuts in the cultural budget of the Berlin budget.

New #AR artwork by Alice Yuan Zhang on our #openAR platform (2024):

https://openar.art/a/rFWXQAgsRkxrTA8Z

Diatom Radio Network

2022

This piece imagines an underwater infrastructural ecology beyond the user-device binary of the early 21st century. Algae, humans, e-waste material, and surrounding species have evolved to learn a shared medium of communication. They mutually power, use, and embody the network-habitat. Information flows across an Indra’s net of neurotransmitter-like sites, a mechanism which depends on and gradually deepens the connectivity of all participating organisms.

Recent 2024 #AR artworks by @khjeron on our #openAR platform:

https://openar.art/artworks

  1. Time Fold

It is an artistic masterpiece that exists beyond the realms of painting or sculpture, sound or silence. As the Time Fold unfurls, it weaves the very fabric of reality itself.

  1. The Visitors

Within this artistic enactment, the concept of 'worldmaking' serves as a guiding framework, fostering the creation of a plethora of imaginative scenarios that embrace a diversity of perspectives. Rooted in the ethos of embracing ambiguity, discomfort, and the spaces where knowledge remains elusive, the project challenges conventional notions.

If the visitors all are down there, then the whales may know and be peaceful good neighbors with them. Maybe, like Charamaynne studies dolphin language, all the visitors start trying to communicate with whales, dolphins and other animal intelligences.

"If you decide to let me in on your secret existence with a visit, please call ahead of time so I can brace myself for the honor of coffee, tea or so." says Charamaynne.

  1. Fish Elevation Training

A fish elevation technician is a member of an alien civilization who abducts fishes at night. S/He impregnates the fishes with advanced technology. When a fish is impregnated by an elevation technician after its abduction, the technician remains motionless, but begins to shiver as soon as a new fish appears.

A small elevation incident happened.

The fragrance seller of Bhopal tries to take it upon themselves, which unfortunately creates additional problems.

  1. The Nothingness Corporation

Nothingness, they say, is their product. An intangible concept, a paradoxical notion, it is simultaneously the most elusive and sought-after commodity in the cosmos. In this age of boundless knowledge and limitless possibilities, it is the realm of Nothingness that intrigues and captivates the minds of the visitors.

https://panke.gallery/exhibition/alt-nets

The exhibition Atl Nets is part of find.select.transform – Resilient Networks in a Wounded World, a project which responds to the pressing social, ecological, and economic challenges of our time. It employs artistic positions to critically examine how current technological developments and organizational practices can contribute to a sustainable transformation of our society.

The project aims to highlight alternative strategies, aesthetic positions, and networks that challenge the conventional understanding of growth. In doing so, it emphasizes the role of art in narrating such developments and seeks ways to address power imbalances and extractivism.

The focus will be on artistic positions regarding the climate catastrophe and community networks that promote democratic participation and equality.
