Went to the cinema for a change this week. I forgot that if you arrive on time you have to sit through half an hour of advertising, (most of it for huge cars with unavailable features). And this was at Manchester's art house cinema.

Oh if only we had economic growth, then we could all have these cars.

What could go wrong?

"by 2040 [Heathrow third runway] might or might not contribute a tiny increment to GDP. But it would, if the warning is correct, contribute to a comprehensive economic collapse shortly afterwards."

The UK government, and Reeves in particular, are sounding more desperate by the day as they repeat the sacred mantra

"Economic Growth".

Ignorant?

Stupid?

Wicked?

Breaking News: (not very) Clean Air Zone proposal accepted

Initial quick reaction: In another bad decision from the government, the GMCA (not very) Clean Air Zone proposal has been accepted.  This was what the previous government sat on for three years. Greater Manchester will be the only major city in the country without a proper clean air zone, its citizens condemned to breathe the particulates and NOx spewed by private cars and commercial vehicles.

This is indicative of the kind of food supply problem that will become more prominent: simultaneous climatic shocks in more than one production area.

A microcosm of the multiple breadbasket collapse that may not be far off.

Free voting needed for Climate & Nature Bill parliamentary process – EnvironmentJournal

In our recent piece, Instant Whip!, we asked supporters to take action for two legislative initiatives, the Climate and Nature Bill  and the Climate Change Plan.  Now it has been confirmed that the government, in the words of Greater Manchester MP and government whip, Jeff Smith, The Government does not support all the proposals in the Bill and so will not be supporting it.

"Europe is the fastest warming continent in the world, and climate risks are threatening its energy and food security, ecosystems, infrastructure, water resources, financial stability, and people’s health. According to the European Environment Agency’s (EEA) assessment, published today, many of these risks have already reached critical levels and could become catastrophic without urgent and decisive action."

Instant Whip!

Legislation, legislation, legislation! Two things are happening now to make sure the UK is legally bound to keep its carbon emissions as low as possible. They both urgently need more people to take action if they are going to be effective. Without these, the government is currently aiming for more economic growth that will without doubt add even more to the 1.5 degrees increase that now seems inevitable, even if they promote it as “greener”.
